Right, there was a mobile camera van today on an approach to a roundabout, I didn't quite see it as I just pulled out past the car in front of me (2 lanes) I didnt over take the car but sorta went in line with it, slightly in front then saw the van and slowed..

Any ideas if these camera vans target BOTH lanes, usually left or usually right or is it at random?? I don't think I went past the car to the left of me, I think I hit 36mph max before slowing down... I genuinely thought it was a 40 limit but went back and saw it was a fukin 30 for about 100 meters where the van was! GRrr

I didn't see a flash or anything but presume they are radar so don't flash.. any ideas on this?? I guess I have 14 days to find out but I soooo don't need this as that'll be bye bye licence (well, ive had my licence for 4 years, but car entitlement for 1.5 years, i have 5 points already, do i lose licenece at 6 or does the 2 year perioud start from when i first got my licence? i.e i wont lose my licence now if i do get 3 points??)

You won't lose your licence, the 2 years probation period is for your first licence. After those 2 years you can gain any other licence without going through the probo period again.

HTH.

If that's 100% true then I'm vvvv glad of that cos I really don't want to lose my licence, I genuinely don't speed around town or similar roads anymore (only speed on motorways, but only 80 as thats as fast as my van goes lol) after I got done for 55 in a 30 I really toned it down lots, don't ride the bike on the road anymore either so really I shouldn't be too worried about getting done for speeding, but as I say, I thought it was a 40!

GPS speed camera detectors going in the van full time now Laughing

You sure it was speed cam? could well just be a road tax camera

It had "Safety camera partnership" on the side, and if it was a tax one they'd have stopped me for no tax Embarassed Laughing (its been taxed now online! but i only bought the van yesterday and didnt realise it had no tax )

although it was a strange place for a speed camera site, right by a roundabout? Confused

The vans are laser linked to video recording equipment, they don't flash.
The laser equipment can measure your speed both coming towards and going away, so could easily do both lanes. Range is about a mile, although they usually stick to a few hundred yards range.
Good news is:
1. Although manned, they aren't operational all the time, often they just park as a deterrent and read the paper.

2. As a bike approaching them, there's no evidence on video that it's you - no front number plate. They may note your registration as you pass them but that's rare. There is a system being introduced where a video camera follows you as you pass the van and registers your plate from behind but it's legally a grey area as it hasn't been type approved for use against motorcycles in conjunction with the laser device.

3. If you were doing an indicated 36 in a 30 they may well not bother to do you anyway'

I'd say chances are you'll get away with it, if they're going to prosecute you they must serve notice on you within 14 days, so if you've herad nothing in a fortnight you've got away with it.

Hi, I was in the van so they have front number plate.

are they not automatic then? so there is a "chance" they werent even recording at the time?

to be honest i dont recall pulling past the car to my left much at all, so either we both got done or neither of us did! hopefully neither!

No, they're not automatic, every single speed check has to be carried out by an operator sighting his laser and placing the dot on the front of your vehicle to record it's speed.
Chances are you'll be ok but there's no guarantee, just got to wait the two weeks out!

There is a technological defense against these vans, it's known as a Laser Diffuser and it's a small device costing around £300 that you fit to your front grill, when it detects a laser beam it fires a laser diode back and confuses the gun so it can't get a reading. They do work but the police don't like them and there have been two prosecutions for their use, both in South Wales. Your choice, but I'd have one!

I have yet to see proof of those working. Its a bit like the Irish truckers with their CDs in the windscreen. Rolling Eyes

Once it's detected the beam it's too late.

Well, this is a true revelation to me!
I always thought that it was 2 years after your current (last) licence your probo period started.
IO have had my bike licence over 2 yrs, but my car licence just over 1 year.
I thought I was only half way through my probationary period in the car.
turns out not?

cool Thumbs Up

No, they work. Laser guns are totally unable to get a speed reading.

Seriously Jo and Sparks, I speak the truth. The 2 year probation is on your first licence. 100% certain.

No it isn't. In order to calculate your speed the laser gun must fire a burst of laser and measure the reflected beam over a period of time to measure the distance you travel over time. The period of time isn't long - about a third of a second in the quickest systems - but since the diffuser responds almost instantly the gun is blanked and no speed will be recorded.

A bit of text copied from an independant test of one of the available systems:

With our boot load of Laser guns, don't ask, it not easy buying this stuff, we had to tell a few lies and spend quite a few quid, but it is possible to own your own speed detection gun.

Off to a nice quiet straight road, after all we did not want to attract too much attention, did we? We did the test by using the four main Laser Guns used in the UK, the LTI 20-20, Riegl LR 90, UltraLite LR and Prolaser II

We then drove our test car towards the guns in turn doing several runs, we targeted the number plate and as many other parts of the cars as possible at ranges of over half a mile, so far in fact it was hard to spot the car in the sights of the guns.

All the guns had a real problem they all showed errors, the LTI went through almost all the errors it could find, none could get a speed and only some could get a distance, even at 20ft the guns could not get a speed reading, not only that, but it DID NOT bring up the LTI's Jammer indicator.
