Hi guys,

I've been looking at getting an XBox 360 for Christmas.

Looking at the two available, the Premium seems to be the one to go for. However, speaking with a mate, he says the HD is only needed for original XBox games? So apart from the headsets and wireless controllers, by buying the Premuim pack, am I getting good VFM?

I really want to get my hands on Gears of War and Quake 4. My PC is just out of spec for new games and as it's coming up for 5 years old, the core components (motherboard, CPU, RAM) would need to be upgraded = much money!

Cheers!

Your mate is talking complete shite - The HD is used to store all your saved games and anything you feel like downloading from the Xbox marketplace. If you don't have one, you will need to buy an alternative storage device (USB memory stick maybe?).
You also get 12 months Xbox live gold with the premium pack which is essential for the 360 as playing other people is what it's all about! (You can't play us lot on Moto GP3 without it)

So basically, bite the bullet and pay the little extra for the full package - there are some really good deals around at the moment.

And the Premiums look nicer. Razz

Play.com, which offers a bundle including a Premium 360 console and a copy of Gears Of War for just £269.99 – £10 less than the standard price of a standalone Premium 360.

Gamestation sells a premium pack with a Game Of The Week – widely expected to be Gears Of War by next Monday – for just £279.99

I didn't realise they looked any different! Embarassed

I have a 40Gb USB Hard drive, so no worries about storage! As for Live, well, yes I'm sure I'd give it a go, but not just yet. Not owned a games console since the Mega Drive!

Another very good deal from Blockbusters

Blockbuster has shown the first signs of a serious move into the games market, with an Xbox 360 bundle deal that is sure to turn the heads of Christmas shoppers.
The entertainment retailer is offering consumers a full Xbox 360 Pro console with four triple-A games from three different publishers, as well as £50 of free rental vouchers, for just £349.99. The deal was advertised in national newspapers this morning.

The offer includes copies of Ubisoft’s Tom Clancy Splinter Cell: Double Agent, Konami’s Pro Evolution Soccer 6 and Microsoft’s Gears Of War and Project Gotham Racing 3. Fifty £1-off rental vouchers are also thrown in, which can be used throughout the year.

The offer follows another eye-catching 360 initiative from Blockbuster-owned Gamestation, which sees full 360 Pro consoles bundled with a different Game Of The Week every seven days, for just £279.99.

Blockbuster will also offer copies of Gears Of War for just £34.99 after the game's release tomorrow.

Cheers for the replies.

Currently I have a Compaq Presario Athlon 1.7Ghz. It had 512Mb RAM and a 256Mb video card. HD space sits at over 200Gb.

For me to upgrade I would need to replace the M'board, RAM, CPU and as most new m'boards are PCI Express, the video card would also need replacing, I guess along with the hard drive as they are IDE and no SATA.

So, here's the dilemma.

I have a PC which works well (still) that I rebuild every year and I've been more than happy with.

I can spend £300 on a games console that is designed to run games and be an entertainment system. Or shoudl I spend more and upgrade my PC which to this day has never failed me and still serves its purpose well?

Gut feeling says go with the xbox.

Money's kinda tight at the moment. So it's one or the other.

The PC is actually quite good once it's rebuilt. It's due it soon as the AV has expired! Rainy day task that is!

Even if i had a top of the range Pc, there isn't much games that appeal to me on the Pc. I've actually spent quite a while browsing though games around the web but couldn't find any decent ones for me.

Where as the Xbox is pure games so you have a better choice, where else can you play the original Mortal kombat against other players online whilst being ranked. Smile

Xbox 260's are available from eBay, shipped from Nigeria by Mr Uzum-bequi's shipping contact here in the UK. Razz

WAs in Game yesterday, starting at them, thinking if I should or shouldn't. I really am tempted!

Is there any sense in hanging on until after Christmas? Are prices of the current leading console going to drop in the January sales?

I doubt the price will come down that much as they seem reasonably priced unlike the PS3 which will i rekon.

You could try ebay, there's a few 360's on there but would have to watch out for scammers.

Give these vids a look then decide, gameplay footage to tempt you even more. Very Happy

Tempting! Razz

How much room does a saved game take up? If I was to get a 'core' would my 512Mb USB key cope?

Here's a tip I heard on the radio the other day.

The January editions of the PC magazines will all be out in the shops in the next few days, and because of the deadlines and dates they carry adverts with the January sale prices in them!

Don't know how true it is (came from the chap who does www.moneysavingexpert.com so it should be kosher. Thumbs Up
