category C write off

i've tried this topic on another website and i'm getting mixed results.

so i thought i'd ask the adults

my Bike is now a Category C write off.

what do i need to do now to get it road legal?

some people have said it will be Q plated

some have said that it just needs to be MOT'd again.


can somebody give me the facts instead of random guess's?

Do you still have the V5? If so carry on as normal, if not fill in form V62 from the post office and send it off and the dvla will send you a new V5. It won't be Q plated, you'll retain the origional reg no.

No VIC needed, if your existing mot is still valid just fix the bike up to a roadworthy standard, re insure it, and carry on riding.

yeh i still have the V5

so do i just carry on as normal then? wouldnt that be ilegal?

No it's fine. As long as the insurance co have given you the go ahead and have no more interest in the bike. For your own piece of mind i suppose you could stick it though another mot when it's roadworthy.

I never had any trouble putting mine back on the road. Applied for and got the V5 which had no record at all of it being written off, when i insured it they never even mentioned the cat C. And if you sell it you are not obliged to mention it's a cat C unless they ask, the onus is on the buyer to check.

they havent informed me that my policy is cancelled

after a write off it needs an MOT. following this catagory c will be road legal.

Not sure about the insurance. I always thought that after they had paid out the policy was void. Someone else will have to verify this.

my insurance isnt "paying out" though, the other persons insurance is.


claim was settled that it was the other drivers fault %100

I can only speak from experience.

My current 'project' is a Cat C write off. The DVLA have the V5 etc etc.
I spoke to them the other day, and basicly;
I get the bike road worthy, insure it on the chassis number (as it isn't a registered vehicle), take the insurance doc. and MoT down to my local DVLA centre, they can give me Tax, and re-register the bike under it's original registration, then send me a new V5.

It also means you can LEGALLY ride with without a number-plate. Though explaining the situation to Dilbert the Police Officer might cause some confusion, should you get stopped.

are you sure? Ive always been under the impression that the bike keeps its registration but when an insurance co pays out the bike becomes theirs. You then in turn buy the bike off them (or get given it) and you apply for a V5 as if it has been lost. The only thing cat c means is in future anyone that checks it will be notified its been crashed/damaged and can check it properly.

Alone: You would not legally be allowed to ride without a number plate - if this was the case there would be hundreds of bikes flying about thorugh cameras etc with no plates!
