Handing in notice/leaving job

Ok well I've never walked off on a job before, but after just over 2 years at my current place I feel it's time to move on and see what else I can find. Just wondering WTF I'm supposed to do re telling them I'm leaving, as said I've never done this before!?

give them notice about a month if its permanent i reckon.

one place i just told my boss in the office apparently this one seen as bad form and rude and i shd have asked the boss for a quiet word and taken her into the seperate room. as if i was breaking some bad news to her or something.

My ex was a team leader at this place and apparently after i had gone, they moaned for ages saying how rude i was by just saying it in front of the rest of the office.

Put it in writing, and keep it to a very simple "Please accept this letter as notice of my resignation. I expect my last working day to be (whatever day is your notice period, usually the same frequency as you get paid)."

Don't put anything else in the letter, especially reasons for leaving.

I get paid monthly and I think I'm gonna have it so I leave on the last day of the year, to "wipe the slate clean" as it were


Also why shouldn't I put in reasons for leaving?

Already tried but it's hard getting something when you're already in a job. Would rather have a date set for leaving, then go find work.

If you are on good terms with your employer and leaving on good terms, speak to your manager about it when you have a chance for a quiet word.

I see no reason why you shouldn't mention your reasons for leaving such as you mentioned here ie. you want to move on and try something different. Perfectly valid reason for leaving your job.

If you're paid monthly, you usually need to give a months notice, but the further in advance you can let them know, the better because they have time to advertise for a replacement. Take this on board when having your chat, something along the lines of "I'm thinking about leaving, I've decided it is time to try a new direction. I was thinking about going in the new year but if you need me to hang on and cover for a bit longer 'till you get someone else sorted out, just say they word."

No need to be sneaky and uptight about it, it's not like you're leaving under a cloud or something. You'll need to write a letter stating you wish to terminate your employment with a months notice starting whatever date, again, no need to be stiffly formal about it. The polite way would be to hand the letter to your manager having already discussed the situation with him.

Keep everything polite and chatty and try to make everything as easy as possible for your employer so they're not left short-staffed. This way you ensure a glowing reference, hell, you might even get a leaving party/present . If you're really good, they may even want to keep you and make you an offer to make it worth your while staying.

Write one letter and rant and rave as to why you are leaving , be truthful offensive even , then
throw it in the bin,

The have an off the record chat with a manager about your concerns , try to resolve them ,

if you can't leave using a this is my notice of resignation etc.....do not use a nasty letter
burning bridges is bad , a recent leaver burnt his bridges and now works stacking shelves
in ASDA as he let off some pent up anger on his leaving day , he dare not even crawl back.

Don't forget to claim your holiday pay 1.6 days per month under UK law I think , unless of course
you actually took some holidays, at which it'll be reduced.

Also when giving notice if it is a big company and they want to protect their interests they'll stick
you on Garden leave, my corp should have done this with a leaver in August , he handed in his
notice and proceeded to steal a huge number of clients , Garden leave effectively is full pay sit
at home on your ass.

But stay until you find another job , its always easier to get another job (though less time to look)
while in a job, for starters they can't play the game was he pushed or did he leave?.

You can always ask new potential employers not to contact your current employers until you
have a solid job offer.

Dont be offensive, be polite and courteous. Remember every application you fill in thereafter will ask for a referee from your last job...

If you must leave before you get another job, get around all the Personnel agencies now and get yourself temp work, sometimes one of these placements could lead to something more permanent. Be prepared to work for low money too.

Och well spoke to my manager today - he said he'd keep quiet about it and 2 weeks before I want to go I should hand in my notice, which I found a bit strange but hey!

I`d be very careful if i was you. I worked for a firm that paid monthly. I gave them the notice that they required, in a polite note.(most other colleagues just disappeared on pay day, and went to court later).

Come my last day,(pay day), i found i had been stripped of at least a third of my wage. It took a lot of trouble getting what i was really owed.

Unless the employers are REALLY good, fuck them. Keep your cards close to your chest, and remember your the boss of your life.

(My attitude stems from the fact that the majority of employers do not care in the slightest about you or your life, just the profits you make them)

Definitely find the new job first.
As has been said, it looks far better if you're in work whilst looking...
You can give reasons of "don't find it challenging enough" or "Trying to broaden my experiences" etc , rather than having to explain why you're not working.
And if you end up taking a while to get a job, it will just get harder...
The other option if you're rich enough is to take a 'time out' and travel the world for 6-12 months, possibly working as you go. That certainly doesn't look bad on a CV... Although you could even negotiate that with some companies to let you back...

Well come march roughly I'll be able to go back to my old seasonal job at the council, if I need to. Been trying to get some work on my days off with the chainsaw or delivering stuff in the van but aint got anything that steady yet


Also been thinking about doing voluntary work (which the government will give you money for) with like BTCV or someone
