I found a security tag still attached to something I had stolen oops just PURCHASED from ASDA a couple of weeks ago.

I attached the thing to one of their trollies.

Wonder how long it took them to find the tag was on the trolley and not in some innocent victim's bag?

The headscarf argument is like 100% on the mark. Tbh i don't think it's fair that is should not be one rule for one and one for another.

It's almost as stupid as when some pubs make you take your hat off. If you want me to look in a camera, tell me i couldn't give a crap i want to wear my hat (i know wearing hats in doors is rude, but maybe i'm bald).

The thing is no one would ever dare ask some to move some relgious headscarf. I know this is a stupid arguement, but whos to say my religious darth vader mask is any less important, how dare you belittle my religion Smile

Anyway back to the original argument, yes taking off your lid in fuel stations sucks.

Some one should sned me to bed now.

I went to my local (Note: Local, use it alot) Tesco petrol station/shop... About... 11:30pm. They're open 24/7.

By the time i'm leaving and heading for the bike it's got to him calling me a dickhead (Yeah, real professional), and telling me i'm banned...

Anyway, that bike is sold now so i'll be having fun next time I go on the new bike... Anyone want a recording of round two?

Edit: There is/was no sign on the door asking me BEFORE I enter to remove my lid.

They can refuse to serve whoever they like - but it's a bit late once they've dispensed the petrol. Somethimes they have signs saying that "Removing your helmet allows us to serve you better" - I suggest that the customer knows best and we can be served perfectly well with them on thank you very much.

Anyway - I hope that you have contacted the store manager. It will be interesting to see what he has to say about his staff lying about the law and more importantly, calling their customers dickheads. Please write in to him (and threaten a letter to head office if you don't get a reply). I'd suggest you ask him to arrange for an apology directly from the member of staff concerned (would be very nice if this was done verbally, in the store, in front of the manager). Thumbs Up

Well, I did end up going back on my new bike as promised. Unfortunately for me all the pumps were not open due to the containers being filled... but as I was on the forecourt there he was... asking me to remove my helmet, and remove my balaclava. What was convienient was the Police who were also at the store at the same time, I shouted them over and the guard dove in saying I was barred... I asked if it was a law at all, and they confirmed to me that it isn't, only a store policy. I was happy with that, looked at the guard smugly and told him i'm happy with knowing I am right, and that I will explain this to the manager when I speak to them.

I have been into the store and asked for a manager, and was pointed in the direction of some guy who was just "The highest person in the store at the time", all he could do was give me the name of the store manager and the postal address of the store.

I also went back just to pick up some fecking glade air freshner candles for the people I live with and accidently asked this guard where they were "You're barred". Again I spoke to another person who was just the highest person in the store and not the actual manager".

My next course of action is going to be writing a letter to her, outlining the dates/times of these incidents (Which is simple enough because of posting here about it), explaining how I am completely unhappy with being told I have to do something which is law, when it clearly isn't. I shall ask for an apology, and my ban to be lifted, and if she has no intention of this I shall ask for the name and address of her boss, and if she is Ok with me writing to the MAG informing them that Tesco Express are not biker friendly and that they should be avoided Nationwide.

I'm not too good at demeaning letters like that though, anybody fancy lending a hand?

[email protected] is my MSN anyway.

You may also wish to ask if it's Tesco policy that security guards have the official managerial capacity to decide who is permenantly barred (not ejected on a single occasion) from Tesco stores and also if this ban is for that store only or from all Tesco stores nationwide. If you are banned throughout the UK, for actually paying for your petrol (whilst wearing your helmet) that should make a wonderful story in the Sun. Even better if you tell them that there was no point removing it as you were wearing a balaclava underneath anyway (which looked just like a habib) as that's rather topical at the moment.

If you want to turn the knife a bit more, if he told you that you are barred in public (within earshot of another customer) tell the manager that you are worried that your reputation may suffer as a consequence of this public defamation (slander) by a Tesco employee and hence you require a public apology (perhaps in the local newspaper).

After all, why should we have to inconvenience ourselves because they have poor customer service skills, so poor in fact that they are unable to serve any customer who is a walking hat wearing, hood wearing Burka/hijab or helmet wearing member of the public.

Do they ask disabled people in wheelchairs to stand up at the high counter in the petrol station to pay?

Banks have signs not to wear helmets.. go walk into one of those with your lid on.

Or maybe even try a balaclava, they both conseal your face, which could also prove illegal if they say you were using it to conseal your idenity to steal something.

Dear Helen xxx,

I am writing to inform you of an incident which recently occurred at your Tesco Express/Filling Station on Whitegate Drive on Tuesday the 7th of November to which I am very dis-satisfied.

I felt I was dealt with in a very unprofessional and unprovoked manner, and
As such will be writing to the district Manager and the Motorcycle Action Group in regards to this matter if an amicable solution is not achieved with yourself.

The incident which occurred was regarding the store policy of the removal of
Motorcyclists helmet's and led to the 'barring' of myself by a nameless member of your security staff (He refused to provide a name, and only provided an extensive code number which was provided in an unsatisfactory manner).

Upon entering your store after successfully filling my Motorcycle with petrol (And not being asked to, or seeing a sign asking me to remove my helmet), I joined the que to pay; I believe I was the second in line. The guard asked me to remove my helmet, which I declined to as it would prove to be an inconvience to myself – I was also wearing earphones and a balaclava, I was in no mood to spend five minutes getting ready again when I would have been on my way within 60 seconds if I had been allowed to pay in the first place.

Due to the way this matter was dealt with, Also the confirmation from the police upon my second visit to the store after my run in with this guard, that is it in fact NOT law to remove afore mentioned helmet, I would be gratefully satisfied if This particular member of staff apologised with the relevant manager present.

Due to the wrongful barring of myself from this store, and the unprofessional response I received upon vacating the store, to which he informed me of his opinion of my being a ''dickhead'' to which I feel deeply discomforted due to such a slanderous remark.

The occasions I have been present since I have been repeatedly harassed and bullied into vacating this store and property; Including one time in which I spoke to the “present manager” who could only ask me “Didn’t you ask if we would ask a ‘paki’ to remove their veil”, which were not at all my words. I await a response within 3 days from the date of this letter before I take further action.

Yours Sincerely,

Michael Morris

Watcha... here's what I would have written. Thought it needed to be a bit more pompous Wink

Quote:

Dear Ms XXX,

I am writing to complain about an incident which occurred at your Tesco Express filling station on Whitegate Drive on Tuesday 7th November 2006. I was dissatisfied with the manner in which I was treated to such an extent that I feel it necessary to contact you and raise a formal complaint.

On the date in question I was in the process of purchasing some petrol, as I have on numerous occasions in the past from the same store without incident. As usual, having filled my motorbike I entered the shop to pay and joined the queue. However, on this occasion whilst in the store I was asked by a security guard to remove my helmet, which normally I try to avoid while fuelling due to the inconvenience involved (as well as the helmet I would also have to remove my balaclava and earphones, not to mention putting it all back on again afterwards).

I mentioned this to the security guard and said that I would prefer not to remove it and he told me that I had to take it off because it was the law. Now this is obviously nonsense. You and I both know that there are laws governing when I have to wear a helmet, but currently there are none concerned with when I have to not wear one.

Angry at the security guard trying to exercise his perceved "power" over me I refused to remove my helmet and paid for my petrol with it still on my head (without incident, for the record). The security guard, however, wasn't yet finished and announced that not only was I barred from the store in future, but also that I was a "dick head". I don't consider that to be particularly professional behaviour from a customer-facing employee.

Based on my experience I have two complaints.

The first is the question of whether or not it is necessary for motorcyclists to remove their helmets when fuelling. Not only is this inconvenient for the motorcyclist, but it also makes the pump unavailable for other customers whilst the motorcyclist is removing gloves, glasses, helmet, balaclava, earphones etc and putting them all back on again afterwards. An additional point is that helmets are both expensive and fragile (one knock can render one useless) and the safest place for a helmet to be is on the rider's head. It can get kicked, run-over or just dirty (I have to put it on my head, remember) whilst on the floor, and if rested on the pump or handlebars it can easily be dropped. If it is Tesco policy that helmets must be removed whilst fuelling I suggest that not only should suitable secure helmet storage areas be provided, but also that the policy should be publically announced so that motorcyclists can choose to fuel elsewhere if they wish. A belligerent security-guard with no people skills is not the ideal mechanism for broadcasting this informtion to the motorcycling public.

Secondly (and more personally) is the case of the security guard in question. Regardless of whether "the customer is always right" these days (it does seem to be less and less the case) I feel that the situation was handled particularly badly and could have been avoided if he hadn't been so keen to excercise his "authority". As much as I would like to be able to express myself more eloquently, I feel the phrase "little Hitler" sums him up perfectly. It would perhaps be wise for him to consider attending classes to improve his social conduct, or maybe rethink his choice of career if his behaviour towards other members of the public is akin to that which I witnessed.

Having returned to the store several times since the unpleasant incident I have receved further abuse and intimidation from the security guard in question. On one occasion I mentioned my complaint to the "present manager" and was asked if I had raised the point about whether they would ask a "paki" (their words not mine) to remove their religious headgear. After a conversation like this I felt I had no option but to complain to you directly.

I would appreciate a written apology, preferably from the security guard in question over the incident. I would also appreciate my "ban" from the store being lifted as I feel I have been unfairly singled out and victimised by a security guard with a grudge. As well as this I would like to know if it is Tesco policy to demand motorcyclists remove their helmets while purchasing fuel. If this is the case then I will contact the Motorcycle Action Group in order for them to make it known amongst the motorcycling community that Tesco is not a motorcycle-friendly store. If you are unable to help me then please let me know because I am more than happy to take this matter higher up the chain of command at Tesco if required.

I look forward to reading your response in the near future. Thank you in advance for your attention.

Yours sincerely

Ive never seen this in petrol stations in Dublin (yet?) so I cant relate.

However I would find it annoying to take off my lid and neck warmer which was postioned perfectly in place over my face just for 60 seconds at the pumps. It takes a lot of fiddling to get my warmer postioned just right. That would annoy me greatly!

I take off my lid any other time, ie shops, police pullovers, entering the Bank, and talking to friends, as it is more curtious.

A few suggestions if I may!?

If they refuse to turn your pump on again you:

A) Simply remove one small padlock from your pocket and procede to lock the pump to its cradle. (There are hooks there for it. Do it to each of the stations pumps if you dare, then leg it!)

B) Take off your helmet but then put on a clown mask and see if they have a sense of humour and maybe turn the pump on...?!
