Ok, its come to this.

I`ve had 3 bikes in the last year, but my damn BRAIN wants another one. I have a perfectly good bike, a brilliant bike infact (2003 ZX6R B1H) which i am happy with in every way (apart from the excruciating discomfort of course)

So, in my mission to do my own head in and never be pleased with what i have in my hand i`ve decided its time to get another bike. So, which one out of the two?

My heart says TL1000R because i much prefer the looks and theres just something about it, the sound, the fully faired suzuki blue livery, it just strikes me as an awesome machine with a real presence.

The SV1000 looks ok to me, although it doesnt look exactly brilliant, and i have heard the engine is less powerful, BUT it is newer.

I am also aware that the SV range is built to a cost, am i right in thinking that the TL1000R has better quality components?

so, i am looking for opinions please!

THANKS!

If that's the major problem with your current bike, I'd go for the SV, as it's riding position is a fair bit more upright, while the TL-R is moderately 'extreme'.

TL1000r is obsolete. Will feel like a barge after your B1 (though a very torquey barge).

SV's strike me as the sort of bike where what you see is what you get, good honest bike, specced down to bargain basement price

The TL looks better, handles better, has more oomph and has a better build quality than an SV but compaired to a B1 its gonna be a real handfull aswell. The B1 would be faster in most hands too.

If it's a choice between the SV and TL then the TL wins hands down. Personally i've got a real passion for them. But there are much better bikes out there.

SV1000 is the only bike I haven't read any negative report on magazines. I don't know well about TL.

The two bikes aren't really 100% equivalent. The TL1000R was an attempt to make a V-twin sportsbike - an alternative to a 998, RSV or SP1 or 2, and ultimately seen as not as good.

The SV1000 is more at the sporty end of sports tourers. The Firestorm and maybe Sprint RS are the closest things to it. It's got a much more relaxed riding position, and from what I can tell, a better low-down power delivery, at the expense of top-end.

The SV engine may be derived from that in the TL1000, but then so is the engine in the V-Strom. i.e. just because it's a slightly sporty roadbike doesn't necessarily mean that they're absolute equivalents. The newer ones have a claimed 120PS (up on ealier models), and seem to spin up to speeds that are quite rapid on the road pretty easily.

I've just bought one (an SV that is). I've bought it as a basic, honest to goodness bike that I can just ride, that is resoably comfortable and fast enough. I'll quite likely put hard luggage on it, so I'm viewing it as a sports tourer. I'd consider it as a viable only bike, seeing as most of my mileage is commuting a 50 mile round trips rather than summer rides. It'd be less good for sunny Sundays and trackdays, but wouldn't disgrace itself there. However, I've got a 600 for those anyway.

If you like the classic Suzuki colours try to find an SV from 2005. They did a limited edition version in this livery:

Suzuki dealer George White in Slough had one as their demo model. May still be there.

The George white one wasn't there when I looked...

There's an SZ for sale on Visordown at the moment. I would have bought it if it weren't so far away. The seller seems keen to sell...

Thankyou for the replies!

The Millie is an option i guess, looks very cool, although i`d be looking at around a 2002 model with the money i`d get from the sale of the B1H.

And handling isn`t really an issue i don`t think, after having a Bandit 1200 on the road. I think also that the Tl would be alot more comfortable than the B1h, as the fact that my bike has a seat at all seems an afterthought by the Kawasaki designers.

mmm . . . . Your right of course in saying that the TLR is outdated, but then racing and cornering as fast as possible are not really important to me at this early stage in my biking career! much more important for me personally is the way the bike moves and sounds, and also its presence, i doubt with my current skill level i`d be able to take it to its limit round the bends anyway, infact i probably couldnt upset a C90 round the bends Razz

Ok, so i`ll try and get a test ride on an SV1000 and see what i think, doubt i`ll be able to get one on a TL with them not being new bikes and all.

RSV is still in my mind, although i`d have to get the Factory one so that i wouldnt constantly feel like i`d got 2nd best, which pushes me into another price range!!

Doh, shall i just get a Ford Focus?

And before anyone suggests a ducati 9**, i cant afford the servicing, so there.

Unless you get a 999R, you'll probably be getting second best as far as twins go.

Of course, go for a twin and you're getting about 30th best if you go for that 999 against proper bikes Razz.

With it being the sound and style that seems most important to you, I'd suggest you get which ever you think is prettiest.

Personally, from the way you describe it's likely use, it sounds like the SV might be the best bet from a utilitarian point of view.
However, while you may not be pushing a bike around some corners, you may find some bikes naturally give you more confidence than others.

thats a though one, altho personaly id get an sv 1000, my mates dad has one and o my god it looks amazing, one went past me on my last ride out and it sounded awsome, i believe they put out 125bhp which i believe is exactly the same as a tl1000, although dont quote me on that, ive also read the tl1000 has slightly odd handling, but again never having riden one i wouldnt know, maybe try get test rides on both and see which one you prefer.

but which ever one u get u can be safe in the knowlage that im so dam jelous lol

I personally cant stand the looks of the TL1000R, Looks like a big massive boat. Not heard meny good things about the handling either, never ridden one myself but I'd imagine it's fine until you're at the limits then it spits you off into a lamppost !

SV1000 seems a tad tame tbh.

Mille's are VERY cheap for what you get, although I'm not to fussed on the early ones, which are the cheap ones.

I love the looks of 916/996/998's but I'm not sure how long one would last over winter.

I went through all this when I decided that my next bike was going to be a V-Twin, there just isnt alot of choice. Decided on a VTR1000 SP1 in the end, lovely machine imo Smile

Found a fairly intesting review of the 2004 RSV Factory (Magnesium wheels and Ohlins front and brack) Duke 999S (Ohlins front and back and uprated engine) and the 'dated' unchanged since 2002 Honda SP2 which was half the price of the 999S and 1/4 the price of the RSV. Heres the review: https://www.motorcycle-usa.com/Article_Page.aspx?ArticleID=1131&Page=1

As much as it pains me to say, I think a 06 600 would wipe the floor on all of the 1000cc V-Twins (on the track with decent riders). All V-Twins are heavy and generally only make about 115-120BHP standard, whereas 600's weigh a good 40kg less and make maybe 110-115BHP. Cant say it bothers me, I enjoy the torque and the noise.

I would go for the TL.. and that's coming from an SV fan aswell Very Happy

You see, whilst the spec/quality works so well on the 650 version, on the thou it just looks out of place and budget looking.

In short the SV650 is just an all rounder/newbie bike. Always will be, and at the end of the day, there is nothing wrong with that. The SV-thou on the other hand is a bit like a Porsche Boxter... you are only driving one because you can't afford a 911.

^ what he said, only I wouldn't go for a TL either Smile

I've never ridden a v-twin but from what I've seen, I'm not a huge fan of the idea.
For example, a monster 1000 only makes a claimed 94bhp, only a little more than my 600 hornet. Fair enough you'll get more torque and it looks very nice... but it hardly seems worth the extra insurance and cost. I know thats a very simplistic comparison, but for me they seem like bad value in terms of bhp for your money.
If I was you I'd go for the Mille, its got so much presence which sounds like what you're after. Also I wouldn't worry about the factory version, I don't think the average rider would tell the difference. For those with more money than sense IMO Thumbs Up

I you sure you're not thinking of the TL-S which had a 'widow maker' rep - I always fancied getting an early 'full power' one. However, having talked to a few people that own/have owned one who also had sports 6s etc, they all said they prefer the sports 6.

The TL-R had it's handling mostly sorted. However like many twins it's still bulky and has a fairly focused riding position that doesn't matcdh the engine to my mind.

Keen
The ponceier versions of the RSV are supposed to be good value for money and make real differences for people that do enjoy 'spirited' riding. Were I go for a sports twin for the road, it would probably be the earlier RSV-R (That was the older souped up version). However, then I'd probably find the need to shoot myself Razz.
Still quite a fancy an early TL-S, but only if it was cheap as a 'boring get to work' style bike.

yeah to be fair I have heard that if you were to buy all of the parts that the flash rsv bike includes the cost would be quite alot higher than the price difference aprilia charge over the standard rsv (actually I think I heard that about the tuono factory, but i guess it applies).

Still, I suspect alot of people buy these factory-version types of bikes to look like they enjoy 'spirited riding', when in fact they enjoy polishing and standing around at bike meets next to their machine bullshitting about 'spirited riding' Smile

I judge bikes by how cool they look when they overtake me when I'm in the car. (Sad, some might say)

RSV is the ultimate to this day.

I don't think it looks great, however, I'd suggest you learnt to wheelie, then by a BMW R100 rat bike.

Unfortunately mine has just sold, but people stop and look a lot more when you do this and you're not on a shiny new sports bike Smile...

get a mille or SP1.

If your looking at a TLR you may aswell get a Busa with big fat pipes and be done with it.

I'd rather a Firestorm over a SV...

cheers
