Hi,

I`ve been wondering if it would be a good or bad idea to get a used Speed Triple for a first "big" bike.
I fell in love with the the first time I heard/saw one, but seeing as its 955cc, coming from a 125cc it seems a bad idea.
Been rideing for over a year now on a CBR 125, if that makes any difference (probably not I would think).

Would most likely have to take out a small loan for a Triple but it would be worth it.

Any opinions?

Dunno, it depends on your riding skill I guess.
Test riding one is the best advice I could give anyone about any bike they might like the look of...

I know of someone who has an earlier edition (Banana yellow "Kill Bill style" limited edition) speed triple who is wanting to part with it (after riding my ZZR and realising that he wants a fairing Smile ) So I could post some pics etc. if I can find them.

Speed triples are HEAVY. Smile. They have tonnes of torque, fly along and the cafe racer position gets the blood pumping when you throw them into a corner.. Smile

K.

Edit: Similar to this one but without the rear cowl.

You will pop a testicle when trying to pick one up, especially if you're used to the gnat's fart weight of a CBR125. And it will rearrange the orientation of your testes once you twist open the throttle.

It does sound good though.

My opinion, get used to a bike with intermediate power and weight before you try anything spectacular. What with you using a small loan to pay for it all, what happens when you do the inevitable and bin it/write it off?

I mean some people can be sensible and do a straight leap to a 750+cc bike, but learn to love your right wrist and treat it with care otherwise it will not give you the respect.

TT600 or speed four sound appealing to you? They're more than adequate for most bikers if you want a triumph?

seeing as the CBR125 is a 4stroke, the difference will be massive. If it was a 2T 125 then I'd say you should consider it but as things stand, no way.
How tall/heavy are you? - we may be able to recommend summat else.

No not it all, just to top off my savings to ensure i can get a decent bike in good time and afford the insurance.

Ive been keeping my eye on prices for these yes.
Only thing that puts me off them is that they are both being, or have been phased out, so spares & after market parts to fit them may be low.

Cheers for the help all. Smile

regarding the power delivery etc.

I found the speed triple quite friendly as long as you were smooth with the throttle and less twitchy than the ZZR. you're less likely to flip the thing than on a 600 sports due to the weight. I was flying around the roads near Thornton/Bradford on the thing and it handled the twists and turns with no problems. Even got some air on the thing when zooming down a b-road with a sizable dip in it.. Smile

I was worried that the thing would be too powerful to ride but it's not that bad and a lot more friendly than expected.

I got to sit on both the Speed four and triple today on a quick stop at a local dealer (South Wales Superbikes).

I liked them both equally but the Triple felt like it had a slight better ride position, as my arms were straighter on the speed four than the triple.

Will definatly have to see if I can get a test ride in the future.

no problem getting spares or after market parts

there is even a specialist triumph breaker who can supply you with most bits you might need cheaper than new parts

so he will still stock parts long after tirumph no longer do

'triumphant' is the name of the breaker
