I have a chance of getting my filthy little mitts on a lovely Hornet, I had kind of settled on the DR, but this seems to be a stonking deal.

My only concern is tank range, I have heard it's pathetic, but looking around the web, it apparantly has a 17 litre tank. Thats the biggest tank I have ever had on any bike, are they really that thirsty?

Are they really 17 litres, and how far can you expect to go before spluttering to a halt?

Tank yous all veddy mooch indyde. (My Irish is coming along nicely)

don't know about spluttering to a halt, fuck that.
but the reserve indicator flicks up after around 100 miles on mine
i've pushed it to 10 miles after that and then pulled in.
however i use it for 10-40 mile an hour city riding.

it is shit fuel consumption at 10 quid a go compared to my 200 mile ybr 125 for a fiver but i can go faster so i don't care.

a touring bike it ain't though.

the next years hornet has a bigger tank still.
don't know why they just didn't put a bigger one on in the fist place. Rolling Eyes

Enjoy the hornet orchestra at 9krpm! Twisted Evil

I intend to take it, or indeed the DR if I choose that, to Spain in April for a week long tour. 100 miles is really a bit crap TBH.

It's a 1998 model, the first one if Parkers are anything to go by, it was also Parkers who stated a 17 Ltr tank.

Do the older models have even smaller tanks? Shocked

also i never know exactly when to stop filling it. i almost brimmed it a few months ago and when i put it on it's side stand at work i came back to 20 pence worth of fuel on the floor. Laughing

I had a 98 model.

Tenner or so to fill her up. Got the usual 95-102 mile tank range. That was all on very quiet A roads and the mpg didn't really differ when I rode sane or insanely (the latter happened a lot...hornet does just beg for more)

Optimax sure did make a difference though, managed to get to 120 miles with that in the tank.

If you buy one, practise on finding the fuel tap when you're on the bike with your left hand (gloves on) Because the bike literally does just splutter then conk out quite quickly when it wants to go on reserve.

Rig up an endurance fuel tank and hook it on the back ,

say when and where you going? , I think I may have the same troubles sport bike touring 100ish miles is about right , but I shall be rigging up highly illegal super endurance fuel tanks, so I can carryat least 250% fuel.

older models had 16 litre tanks. The later ones (i think from 2003 onwards maybe?) have 17 litres. The new 07 bike has 19 litres. The thing is the tank is a weird shape... I think the range problems come partly because if you don't stand the bike up vertically when fuelling you can't get as much fuel in.
100 miles to a tank is what i fill up at just to be safe. It depends how you ride, but I'd say on a later model you can expect 110 before reserve if you ride sensible.
But I've toured on the hornet and seriously, 100ish miles + reserve is enough. After 100 miles on any bike you will benefit from a 5 minute break to refuel and rest.

My mate has a '51 plated Hornet and fills up at around 90 miles just doing the commute to work and back (10 miles each way). It sounds like on the newer ones they are fitting the same tank as the CBF600 (19 L) which gives about 200 miles of range Smile.

The official (from Honda) tank size is indeed 17 litres for the current Hornet.

I fill mine when the gauge starts to flash, usually around the 110 mile mark.

Expect around 30-35 to the gallon for "Normal(ish)" riding.

With Unleaded at average of 85p per ltr round this way, cost approx 12 quid to fill from "Flashing".

My 18L tank on the ZZR will do 150 miles two up with luggage. Hopefully I'll get a chance to take his bike for a spin and he can take the Z for a run soon.. Smile
