PostPosted: 19:25 - 07 Dec 2006    Post subject: Over the drink limit Reply with quote

A friend was stopped yesterday, his brake light was out and he was pulled over by the cops. He says the stop light was ok in the morning and must have blown during the day however as he was explaining this to the boys in blue they decided they could smell drink and he was given a road side test and proved positive. The cops have told him it was just bad luck as they had been behind him for four miles and his road-craft had been exemplary, indeed the pull over was just going to be for a bit of a chat about the light.
His licence is 19 years old and up to now clean but he will no doubt now lose it. He had had three pints of lager and a small glass of wine two hours previously and says he has done this many, many times before with no discernible deterioration to his control and concentration on the road.
Your opinions please.

Same as Johnny.

"I done it before so it is ok"?

Took the risk - got caught. C'est la vie.

No offence but anyone with any common sense would have a maximum of one pint if they know they have to ride on a bike and even that is pushing it. My dad got done for drink driving a few years ago in a car and I had no sympathy, (3 pints ).

Wouldn't have said it was unlucky, more lucky as anything could have happened furthur down the road, to someone else who would be innocent if not himself Neutral

Drinking and driving is inexcusable, I personally agree with a recent quote "It's like firing a gun in a crowd of people". Effectively you can't make excuses for someone who says "they can take it". The fact is alcohol does lower your reaction times, impairs your judgement and increases your confidence.

He was unluckly that he was caught in that way, but maybe he could look at it differently and see himself lucky it wasn't as a result of a fatal accident! He would have found himself in much greater trouble regardless of blame...

What do you consider a safe drink level to be, what is stated in British law or a total ban?

Personal opinion - No trace...

I don't think that it's sensible to drink anything and drive. In a worst case the legal minimum, even that isn't good practice!

Thumbs Up

I have grown up with the media stating the ill fates of drink driving, whereas many an older bloke may have been used to having a drink or two and thinking nothing of it as people getting pulled and being breathalysed back in the day was fewer than today.

If you drink and drive you get everything you deserve...a ban.

Thank you for your input. Now a confession, there was no drink incident. I made it up.
I was surprised yesterday at this thread https://www.bikechatforums.com/viewtopic.php?t=102032 about speeding and dangerous driving. The replies to the guy who had been busted overtaking on the inside and using speeds of well over a ton received almost nothing but support and this surprised me no end speed kills as does the kind of riding I often witness by speeding bikers. The attitude seemed to be "hard luck, we all do it, unfortunately you got caught" I thought I would widen the debate to drinking, just as dangerous but I (correctly) guessed this would be frowned on due to many factors such as Govt Propaganda.
Why is one for of socially irresponsible behaviour accepted and indeed condoned ( there are many videos on here and on Youtube that are blatantly illegal and dangerous but get nothing but praise) and another one 100% condemned? It reeks of hypocrisy and double standards.

Speeding is nt condoned either, people just tend to think thats its big and clever.

I speed everyday, if I get caught then I'll put my hands up and take it like a man.

There are no excuses everyone knows the law, its your decsion to whether you stick to it or not.

My dream for next year is a speeding ticket on the Monkey bike, it would be a major achievement to get the damn thing to go that fast Laughing

Speeding has been argued before

BLUEX5
If you do not see support then you do not see number-plates at 50 yards either. There is little other than advice and commiseration but the fictional drunk in my thread got nothing but out and out condemnation.
I find it hard to diferenciate between behavours that potentualy leave others dead.

Its funny how people try and support drink driving and believe it to cause no harm.

That is plain scarey. I do not condone drink driving at all but that creep revelled in it.
