Does anyone know actually how dangerous this is and if it will affect ones long term health?

I was just looking in my wardrobe and noticed the white parts of my bike jacket. They are covered with filth and dirt (from fumes?). Some of it has turned nearly black! I cleaned it not so long ago, so this has happened within only a couple of months (and I don't ride everyday!).

It shocked me because now I can imagine how much of this stuff has gotten into my lungs!

Maybe it is worth while buying one of those masks that some Japanese people and cyclists wear, especially if riding in the cities?! Or will a balaclava do the same job?

Need something with a filter in it, a balaclava will just give you pscyhological protection, not a physical one.

Go to a builders merchant / supplier they should do ones too.

I doubt it well affect your health mate. the muck on your bike jacket will just be road shite , could be anything i.e dirty rain . puddles splashing up . dead bugs . I wouldnt really worry about it tbh
Or buy a black jacket so you wont notice Laughing

Ah right!

It is strange, that I don't see any other motorcyclists wearing such masks to protect themselves. Or even that there is no official 'Motorcyclist Fume Protector'. Laughing

If you are riding in a major city with all the pollutants in the air then in years to come then there could be problems. But yes, the filth and grime could be just dirt that stains the leathers.

Well, pedestrians get the same treatment. I read somewhere that living and working in Central London is equivalent to smoking 18 cigarettes a day, in terms of carcogens.

Look harder

Yes there is Its called a Respro city anti pollution mask, its more psychological comfort than any real protection in my opinion,

busters sell them ,

but all the black shit is generally diesel particulate , I ride everyday and filter heavily as part of my routine , my red jacket is covered with black spots on the front , on the back and sides there is no grime , wash it , 3-5 days later its back again , if you take photos you'll notice it more when you filter near buses and lorries,

When you leave something in the city it gets covered with a fine film of black crud its diesel particulate.

have you never heard of the old rule? , when stuck behind a bus/lorry/van at lights and you can't filter past hold your breath!

What this means is that in 10 years time we'll all be having lung problems , my general problem isn't the ride into work but that fact that I work around urban centres (generally middle of Mancs and Stockport) which means I get exposed all day though to a slighly lesser extent as I work in a very tall building.

OR

That bus companies will eventually move to better diesel engines hence problem solves itself, however lower particulate emissions have rather a nasty little twist , in that less particulates in the atmosphere means lower albedo effect = more global warming!

heh just don't trim those nose hairs , they give a small amount of protection

I'd also add this little tit bit for you , my old biology professor who used to cycle in daily, once said

"city air is actually quite clean , it should be completely smoggy and black clouds floating around
the ground"

At which somebody says

"Aid in the city isn't like that at all!"

"it should be why do you think it isn't?"

"I dunno"

"humans act as filters hoovering up all the pollutants which makes the air cleaner than it really
would be"

I remember my trip down south to Newquay where I lived and worked briefly , I came back to
a major city and breathing was hard. the Cornish air is really good , night life is shot however.

cyclists wear the old respro masks, i used to wear one when i was cycling

the difference we have to cyclists is that we don't breathe as hard as they do cos we ain't really doing anything.

You get more black stuff out of your nose when you blow it after travelling on the underground. Smile

you only sit next to a smoker every once on a while. You're always in traffic and in the outside world. Diesels are disgusting, and should be banned IMO.

Those Respro masks look good. I will bear them in mind for when I can afford one! Laughing

But the point of my post was to show visually the amount of crap riders/cyclists/pedestrians must inhale. It cannot be good for your health. Yet nobody seems to really care about it!

Palmer, that suit looks good. I might get one for when I am riding the bike. It is yellow aswell, so it will match my bike aswell as making me more visible. 100% safety!

Excellent! Razz
