Just a quick thought, are you wanting a newish looking one?

Stuff like the TDM and older Tiger can be got quite cheaply.
Though I think stuff like the Varadero can also be got for a reasonable price if you go for an early model.

BMW F650, my dad had one, built like a brick shit house.

Never had any problems on his 11,000 km ride from Dubai back to UK apart from the sidestand killswitch cocking up. In which country? Germany! Laughing

In all seriousness though, very impressive machines, he let me ride it a while back and my stocky 5'6 frame managed to fit on it fairly comfortably.

His biggest regret is selling it to his older brother, a couple of months later the git flogged it for more!

I have a 2005 dl650. And the Dl1000 is almost identical to the klv, but i hear the klv has some fairing improvements.

That's what I'm talking about!

I'm looking for something that is about 60/40 On/Off road bias, I'm only really thinking of fire roads or light offroad.

Main thing is I want a high up riding position and a comfy seat, and a scary tank size.

I can't believe I never thought of owning this type of bike before Smile

While most of the above can be ridden off road, so can an R1.

How about something like the Africa Twin - which korn seems to be quite happy with.

That's got more of the 60/40 bias - I'd say stuff like the varadero we're more talking a maybe 5% at most 'bias' towards off road - and that from the styling more than anything.

Are you looking for more decently power than your current bike?

Yep that's why I'm looking at a thou, some of the 650's I've seen make around 52BHP claimed and I don't think that's much of an upgrade.

The majority of big trillies are only "ok" offroad..

example

The transalp and Africa twin.. while both cope very well with offroad the first big rock hiting the underside = smashed water pump = your walking home. there are bash plates and whatnot and they have ran the AT in the dakar with quite a bit of success..

Did a bit offroading on the ta (well more really shitty greenlanes than off), tremedous fun but one drop would have been expensive, i was planning on somke crash bars before i decided it wasn't for me.

https://w1.bikepics.com/pics/2005%5C02%5C08%5Cbikepics-287409-full.jpg

i'd get another but only if i had others to choose from in the garrage.

I think unless you go for one of the rally specials - like the BMW or KTM, don't be expecting anything more than an off-road styled bike.

To be honest, if you're looking to try some trails, for the price off that tiger above you could get a cheaper tiger and get a either a dedicated trail bike (XR250 style) or something like a KLR650 that'll handle roads 'ok' and trails 'ok'.

dominators are very cheap
great in town but very vibey on the motorway

get some test rides before u buy something

in my opinion, big singles with no fairing are no fun on the motorway, and i guess that you might want to use motorways a bit

twins like transalp, tdm850 and africa twin are probably good as an all round bike for this reason i would have thought

tiger will be even smoother with 3 i would have thought

personally, i think it might be worth keeping the gs500, and getting a cheap offroad 4t 250 bike for £500 off ebay

offroad, small bikes are better

I did just called Wyder Warrington about the Tiger and asked yet again for a test ride, and they said no as their insurance doesn't cover it...

I did tell them I had a large deposit to hand and he said I could go for a little ride up and down the back, and I was like... "Err, nah thanks" and left it at that.

Full of bullshit they are, if they ain't prepared to let me try out a 4 grand bike before I hand over serious money for it then they can fuck off

I know they do test ride's as Babyyam's bloke has been offered one...

i know some people think its wrong to ask for test rides from private sellers, but if its a bike u are thinking about buying, and you can afford to buy it if u drop it, i dont think it should be a problem

i wouldnt want to have to try to pick up a tiger though

I am biast because I have one, but don't rule out the 1100/1150GS they cost more to buy to start with. But are simple to work on/service, no chain to worry about, all day domfy and with panniers can carry shiyte loads of stuff. Also the Boxer engine keeps your legs warm in the winter. Wink

Just seen one at the same dealers:

Honda Transalp.

2005, 1,700 miles. £3,500

Cheaper than the tiger.

Will there be much of a difference in power to the GS500 though? I don't want to make the mistake of only taking a tiny step up and getting bored.

Although I am buying this bike to have all kinds of crazy fun on (I really want the luggage, tank range, comfort and storage, so it makes sense that a traillie is for me) I don't want to be looking for a 1000cc in 6 months time.

Cheers,

T

I'll warn you in advance, the power is pretty unimpressive, steady and smooth but not a snarling monster, in fact the cx weighing a good 50kg more and 150cc less pisses allover it performance wise (but the handleing made up for it in terms of "progress") you'll need to give it a go though, i dont think mine was makeing as much power as it should..

Budget for a new seat, its fucking abismal and luggage rack, carrying anyting is tricky on account of the exhaust (which you should check they do go rotten, a LASER is a great replacement) the other thing is a crash bars, the plastics are very expensive and one even light drop will cause breakage.

Personally i'd go for an AT between the two, more power and better built.

Personally, I wouldn't be spending nearly as much money when you can get an older model that does exactly the same for a lot less - probably doesn't look too different.

As mentioned before - how about getting a cheaper trail style bike and maybe even something like a firestorm or similar big bike for the 'upgrade' - anything off road, unless it's a stupidly tuned enduro/motocross bike, is going to be much more of a sideways move rather than upwards move.

Doesn't really make much sense at all. You can stick big spacious luggage on any bike. Plenty of 'streetbikes' have large tanks, and if you are serious you can always get one custom made for you. No real reason why a trailbike should be more comfortable to ride than other bikes, unless you are really really tall.

FF Toby, will you listen to yourself?

How the fuck can you be "bored" of the power on your GS yet, you haven't been anywhere on it! Mad

You haven't redlined it down the motorway yet (have you even been on a motorway yet? Rolling Eyes ), you haven't scraped it up and down the Cat n Fiddle or the A5 to name just a couple of well-known twisties in the area, you've not been up to Bowland or Wales to do the rough terrain thing, you've done three and a bit months of pretty uninspiring urban commuting in gradually worsening weather conditions, you've never taken luggage or a pillion, do I need to keep nagging?

Now is totally the wrong time to be laying out a large wodge of cash on a bike when you have nothing in terms of experience to compare it to.

I'm not saying don't get a different bike to the GS if you're really fed up with it, I'm not even saying don't go out and get a big trailie, but I am saying don't start bleating about not enough power when you haven't even been close to the limits of the bike you have!

Any fool can go fast in a straight line if they have enough power in their engine. Just remember there is so much more to riding than just that!

(and breathe....... Embarassed )

I'd agree with you Jo if lack of power was the main reason i was upgrading. the gs was 700 when i bought it and I don't fancy paying a good lump of the bikes value in parts fixing it. the front brake is complete shite now as well. I nearly had an accident earlier as it took about 5 years to stop. the arm that holds the rear brake caliper up looks bent, which would explain the dragging noise on the rear disc. it's a complete lemon.

i dont believe you, you just want something better

nath did 20,000 miles on an old bike

im not saying you have to, too, but u dont need a korn-mobile to have fun

if you do get another bike, you dont need to spend £4k

a guy who's name i forget who i met at hex's party had a gs500, hated it, and got a thundercat and was much happier with that.

but he appreciated it all the more for having had the gs500

he bought a mint one and promptly dropped it, but he didnt pay more than £2500 for it, and he has since gone round europe on it with this other guy with a ducati of some sort
