I would prefer a CB500 out of those two, but the CB500 is around £700 more expensive from new, although it has about 6bhp and 20mph over the top (claimed) speed of the GS500. It is also costlier to insure (Insurance group 9, compared to the GS's 7). Get your mate to take each out for a test ride and see what he prefers.

Also, here is a diagram you may find useful:

.......seeming as all of your posts are in CAPS and also bold. No offence but we are not visually challenged and we can read normal text perfectly well Smile

Also, you should be able to vouch for the CB500.............. remember [this] thread?

with bikes like that it doesn't really matter too much, they are pretty much the same thing and they both do the same thing so its really down to what you like the look of.

I'm trying to go for the GS just because the insurance is alot less. When it comes down to it they're both just similar 500cc commuter bikes. Smile

So far I've found Rampdale (0870 444 6126) to be cheaper for the GS and CB. Hope this helps. Wink

Maybe that's not quite as stupid an idea as it at first seems.

The bikes are fairly similar, but the GS is marginally better Smile

It is about 10mph slower, and a few bhp down on the CB, but it handles a lot better so on normal roads it will be quicker anyway.

The GS was first released in 1989, and approximately a shitload have been made, so there are loads of people around to help to fix them, and there are loads of spares around.

The engine is aircooled so it's easier to fix if it ever does go wrong.

The GS looks better, especially the 2001-onwards models.

Buy a GS and I'll buy you a burger Mr. Green
