Discovered today that my unborn child (due end of April) is a boy.
Obviously dead chuffed by the news, as it means my plan to raise the next Rossi can now move into a higher gear.
I reckon that (for the first few months at least) his co-ordination will be a bit shit, and therefore buying him a big bike (Gixxer thou, R1 etc) would be a bit of a waste.
It doesn't stop him from riding pillion with me - all i need is a set of leathers and a helmet in a suitable size - naturally in colours to match my bike.
Does anyone here know of any companies producing one-piece race leathers or helmets for the 0-6 months age range? It's not something that seems readily available from Mothercare.
The other thing that worries me, is how he's going to manage the whole pillion bit. I reckon speeds over 100mph (and wheelies) would be a bit much for a small baby with their poor grip strength, so how can i keep him on the back?
I considered bungee-ing him to my back, but my leathers already have a speedhump, I find rucksacks get in the way a bit (not to mention their low crash safety), and a pappoos is far too 'new-age' and gay for my tastes.
So, i'm toying with the idea of sitting him in a tailpack or tankbag - i'm not a fan of tankbags, i find they prevent me from tucking under the screen for high-speed runs - however i worry that with the tailpack he could be thrown out (perhaps as a result of a wheelie, or even worse, a stoppie) and i'd never know for miles - at least with the tankbag i'd have a chance of catching him as he fell with my clutch hand.
Panniers would be a great idea - i could use one for the baby, and one for nappies, bottles etc, but i do find i have a tendency to forget about the panniers sometimes and scrape them down the sides of cars during misjudged high-speed filtering. You don't need to be a doctor to work it out that regular collisions with BMW bumpers wouldn't be good for baby!!
Any ideas?? ____________________ Space Monkey #7

For leathers etc:
https://www.babybiker.com/
For carrying the baby with you:
https://www.road-hound.com/
Yes, I know it's for pets, but I'm sure it can be customised for a baby. By adding a rattle, I suppose. ____________________ My other bike's a Monster... |

Tank bag is the obvious answer.
You could even attach it's arm to the bars so it's ready to go solo after that first six months.
Just do up the top around it to hold it in.

Thanks for the help.
The pet holder idea is a good one, but whilst it offers a modicum of protection, i think it would look shit on the back of my K5 750 - and no way is baby safety important enough to ruin the lines of my bike permanently.
The trailer could work, but again it would look shit.
G has the best idea - i especially like the bit about using it to 'train' him up for his first trackday outing (i'm a responsible adult, he won't be riding on the road till aged 16 at the earliest). Problem is my tankbag does up at the back (oxford humpback), so his little arms couldn't reach the bars.
edit*
Just seen the last posts - i reckon we might be onto something here....
I could cargo net him to the tank - from there he could have his little chubby baby arms tied to the bars to get used to the idea of countersteering. The heat from the engine would keep him toasty warm too - therefore only needing summer leathers and a set of waterproofs.
Two birds, one stone. ____________________ Space Monkey #7

Ever seen the short shifts video that T.W.O gave away a long time back, you need one of those seats you can get for push bikes to put babies in and strap that to the pillion seat! |

What's all this namby pamby stuff about pillions? Give him a taste of fresh air. I suggest strapping him just underneath your headlight, face forward obviously, with legs dangling either side of your front wheel.
That way, he can feel the wind in his face, and you can see how he likes it, and even give him a reassuring pat on the lid if he starts to cry, saying "Don't worry, at the end of this there's a nice warm bottle of milk strapped to the exhaust"
Great thread by the way ____________________ Currently Moto Guzzi 750 Strada, Moto Guzzi V35 Florida, previously Honda CB125T, RD250LC, RD80MX |

I personally think you're nuts taking a 0-6 month old baby on the back of your bike.
I'd at least wait untill their of reasonable size and can sit on the pillion seat with their ickle feet on the pegs and their arms around your gut.
Conclusion? Start losing some weight ____________________ wizzzard wrote: Imagine God just stopping by, tidying your front room up and then quietly letting himself out again. Statisticly more likely to happen than Korn being on here. |
