Hey there

Just wanting opinions from people about the Sym Husky 125, I'm close to buying one for commuting and from what I've heard its not the worst 'import' you can get hold of these days?

Also, I live in Sheffield and am desperately seeking a newish 125. Not too bothered if it's a cruiser, CBR, off-roader, tourer styles etc to replace my current 125 which is no longer up to the commuter job!?

Anyone got anything available?

Cheers Thumbs Up

ah a fellow sheffer!
Whereabouts in sheff are you mate?

If you just want a little 125 for a commute then I would recommend getting an SR125 or CG125

https://cgi.ebay.co.uk/1997-YAMAHA-SR-125-Custom-Motorcycle-in-Burgundy-Red_W0QQitemZ250062131455QQihZ015QQcategoryZ9809QQssPageNameZWDVWQQrdZ1QQcmdZViewItem
fair example of SR125.

They're not expensive, parts are cheap and plentiful, and you don't get the inherent problems of buying a cheap import (ie you know the bike will work, the engine will be bulletproof, and if it stops working it'll be simple to work on)

Saying that I went the stupid route and bought an old Aprilia.

If you are getting an SR the only problems with the school ones were that sometimes they didn't like going from first to second. Honda CGs seemed better in that respect but if you're anything over 5' ish it'll feel like a bicycle with a waterpump for power.

Hi mate

I'm on the south side of our lovely city near Dronfield! Whereabouts are you?

I already have an SR125, which has caused me no end of problems and it really isn't suitable for a reliable commuter anymore. Not suprising really coz it's 12 years old and has over 27k on it, having said that I've spent a fortune replacing all the parts on it and it now just needs a new coil to keep it running for another 6-12 months without further prob's cropping up! Would be an excellent learner bike though for people jumping from CBT to main licences...

I'm looking for a bit more of a looker of a bike, not too bothered about performance. Just something newer that'll be nicer to ride, give me more confidence on the road and get me to work and back everyday without fail, obviously with me looking after it well too!!

I'm towards crookes/hillsborough end, in upperthorpe.

Personally with regards to 125s I think there're two markets; the cheap and reliable commuter side of things, and the stupid highly focused 2t sports bikes. Whilst some manufacturers are trying to produce chopper type bikes (Suzi marauder 125 for example: https://motos.autocity.com/pruebas/Suzuki/Marauder/125/11-2005/img/inicio.jpg ) I'd say it seems like there'd be little point in going down that route.

Have you considered getting your test? If you've already got some road experience on the SR why limit yourself to 125s? Unless you get a focused 2t 125 there's probably little more to learn from 125s.

Yeah, I get this from everyone when I mention getting a new 125 lol.
See, thing is I only have a limited amount to spend and after paying for a test, lessons etc I'm not really gonna have enought left to buy a decent bike and I'll be back where I am now... which would be with a more powerful machine that's forever having prob's coz its old!

I'm also not really inclined towards biking as a hobby, it's simply a means of beating the traffic to work and back every day and saves me a huge amount of time. So a 125 is ample for the 20miles a day journey I do on small roads and occassional dual carridgeways.

lastly, I need a bike urgently and don't have time to wait until my test/lessons. I work near Sheffield airport and it is a complete arse to get too every day by public transport!

Thanks for the thought though... Thumbs Up

Have just had a call about a *Suzuki Burgman (UH125)* that has become available, not sure if I like that kind of style though, opinions please!?

I had a 50cc sym jet. It was an ok bike, when I got it home none of the electrics worked, I took it back to the dealer and they said a plug had come loose.

One morning the bike wouldn't start as the electrics had frozen.

However it held together well when I binned it, needed a new indicator lens (£1).

It kept running basically every day, and it was a good little runner.

However the person I sold it too found the rear suspension collapsed not long after I sold it, luckily for her it was still under warranty. If your getting a new one just make sure you use it for 3 years before the warranty runs out Wink

Hmmm, I've been warned off this by a couple of shops I've spoken to this morning so it's now a no go!

However, I've also heard of a CBR that's coming up with 2k on the clock, now that's what I like the sound of!!

CBRs are trying their hardest to be sports bikes and failing. They're also tiny in person. I was shocked just how small they look when I was wandering around a dealers shop.

agreed, cbr's are very small, maybe try looking for a honda xlr 125 (trail type bike), will be reliable and cheap to run but also not too tiny to ride

Hey,
My mate bought a Sym Wolf 125 5 years ago and its never broken down once. It cost him 750 quid for a 1 year old bike so i guess you can pick them up for peanuts now (I've seen some S reg bikes go on ebay for £275)

The only problems i can see with them is the electrics and the parts availability. He's had a few problems with the fuel gauge light not working, and i wasn't surprised when i looked behind the head lamp shell.

Also when he binned it and cracked the headlamp shell it took 3 months for a new one to come from Sym.

All in all though a cheap and cheerful bike that'll get you from a to b.

Cheers,
Shaun

MZ sm or sx 125s are where it's at for 125 4t. They are pokey, have a sweet chassis and excellent brakes. They don't come up to often on e-bay, but when they do they go for good prices. Mine never let me down, and never showed any sign of corrosion. Built like a tank too, the previous owner binned it multiple times and it just ended up scratched.
