Hi all

I am trying to sort out insurance easy enough task normally !! but i dont own the bike. I am borrowing it off a mate but he doesn't want to add me to his policy as is to much hassel.

So the question is, does anyone know of any insurance companies that insure riders on other peoples bikes.

thanks for any help

if he already has the bike insured you can not insure it again. its called duel insurance and cannot be done. the only way for you to be insured on this bike is by getting yourself added ti his policy

Yes it can be done. Its done on hire vehicles all the time in the courier trade.

The only thing you can't do is claim on both policies at once.

Yes, it can, even on 'normally' owned bikes with 'normal' policies.

Maybe not with all companies, but it definitely can be done.

Just need to call a few more companies.
Especially if it's TPO cover, I don't see there should be any problems at all.

Now ask which law or point in a policy doesn't allow it.

You can insure the same vehicle twice, you cannot cliam twice. Highway back in the 90's had a specific policy for couriers that required you to have a seperate SDP policy.

Whenever i have asked for them to do this on cars and motorcycles they have told me that i cannot insure a vehicle not belonging to me, i couldnt even add a vehicle to my policy that i wasnt the registered owner of, they gave me some spin about me not having any financial interest in the vehicle, i guess that translates to 'if it does'nt belong to you then youre more likely to hoon it', which is certainly not the case when i drive other peoples cars seeing as we have the standard 'you bend it, you mend it' rule in place.

I was told I couldn't be insured on a bike that didn't have the V5 in my name once.

I was always of the opinion you could insure a bike that was already insured.

you don't need to be the registered owner to be the registered keeper I think and you can put insurance on any vehicle but will pay a premium if you dont own it I think.

You may be able to add 3rd party only cover (for other peoples vehicles) onto your current insurance (if you have some that is) and might be able to do it with a car policy. Not tried it though so don't know.

Most Bike insurance (TPF+T and above) gives you 3rd party cover for other bikes, same as with car insurance for other cars...
