Many of carburetor bikes in japan may disappear or become FI due to tightening of emission regulations(to same level with euro3 : HC:0.3g/km). Test mode will be "cold start style" so carburetor bikes won't be able to pass. It starts from Sep.-08(bikes under production)/Oct.-07(new model).
ZRX1200R,Zephyr750/1100/ZR-7 will disappear. XJR1300, W650 will get FI and survive. (according to bike magazines)
Many bike users replace exhaust systems(to which won't pass HC / noise levels if tested) What a senseless regulation.

Is that NEW bikes or existing bikes?

since in the UK NEW cars and bikes are generally FI , except for the new Harlies which cheat by operating a solenoid valve in the exhaust at the spot where EU emissions are tested and everything
in the future will probably be FI too , with the hornet having an uncertain future due to this.

However the UK government allows old carb cars to still run since millions of people have old carb cars and bikes me being one of them. And the government often has to give compensation
when it bans stuff like handguns which got £2000 a piece,

bad news for you , but good news for everyone else , as Japanese folk will just sell them and importers will flood the market with cheaper japanese carb bikes.

Looks forward to a rash of super hot tricked up straight from Japan imports at me local dealer

If its used bikes aswell looks like were in for a huge influx of CHEAP and rare models boys....finally my prayers have been answered. On the other hand if its for new bikes thats not so good as they may change the direction of their design with emissions in mind, rather than performance.

Thumbs Down (i'm hopeing it dosn't include existing bikes!)

I had hered that the inspections there are EVIL, expensive and designed specificly to make it as hard and expensive as possible to own a motorcycle in japan, also afaik its illegal to carry a passenger on a highway.. a friend of mine rides a zzr600out there and was stuggleing to keep it on the road as it was..

Exhausts are the same deal here, allthuogh there are ways arround these things..

In america its a federal offence to "tamper" with the carb settings on bikes (and have you ever seen a californian import bike Shocked

And we think were hard done to in the uk

This is announcement of ministry of Land,Infrastructure and Transport
https://www.mlit.go.jp/kisha/kisha05/09/090829/01.pdf (pdf)
https://www.mlit.go.jp/kisha/kisha05/09/090829_.html (japanese source)

It says
Regulation application time
(1) 126--250cc and under 50cc
2006 October 1st (new model)
(As for continuous production bike and imported bike(to japan), 2007 September 1st)
(2) 50--125cc and over 250cc
2007 October 1st (new model)
(As for continuous production bike and imported bike(to japan), 2008 September 1st)

It include continuous production bike if it is under production at present.
So old models are not included.

never had any trouble from the police about them, even when they'd pulled me for speeding

Yes police doesn't usually check them(except extremely noisy or dangerous modification).
At MOT(over 250cc,every 2years),they check exhaust noise level(below 90 db)
There is no check about emission level. So some users attach normal exhaust only at MOT.

The ban was removed on Apr.05 at last Very Happy (only biker over 20 and has licence more than 2years)

I hope there is no influence to UK except dropout of some models.
