Dead excited, just booked my practical for 3 week's time so now I'm desperately looking for a 'proper' bike. What I'd really like is a new CBR600RR or YZFR6 but that ain't gonna happen. I have around £2k in my pocket, ideally this would buy my bike but it could just as well be a deposit for something around £3-4k from a dealer. Been looking at J-N reg CBR600's so far and the choice isn't huge. Well, it is, but for every likely bike there's 10 dodgy ones. Anybody have any good ideas? I need something to ride to work everyday, take the long way home and make mincemeat of snake pass every weekend. Smile

R6s can be got from a bit over 3k if you're lucky.
IMHO they are only really good as a 'sports' bike, but I know plenty of people that use them on a day to day basis.

Old ZX6s and thunder cats can also be got cheapish.
Bandit's, HOrnet's, Fazer's and SV650s are all worth considering as are things like big trailies if you're willing to be a bit different.

Personally I'd go for a loan for the extra rather than a shop finance scheme.

You could also consider getting something like an older cbr or maybe something not so 'sporty' (unlikely you will make use of it untill you're more used to 'big' bikes).
This way if/when you ctrash you won't be so bothered and you'll be expanding your skills on a bike that isn't way way above them Smile

Cheers for that. Smile Think I'll use the overdraft to get another 500-1000 quid and get something like the SV or Fazer. I see what you mean about dropping it and going too powerful too quickly. I didn't consider the older CBR's because I don't like the way they look, with their slab-sided backsides. Wanted to stick with Honda though, because I've only heard good things about the build quality and parts availibility.

you can get GPz500's for about a grand or if you really need to go honda then a cb5 or a super four would be a good starting point.

Laughing Those nasty sales people will say anything to sell a bike these days Wink Laughing

What are you currently riding? How old are you? I personally advise to spend less on your "first" bike so that (hopefully) you'll spend more time riding it than worrying about dropping it. It would also give you a chance to learn about servicing and stuff without worrying about warranty.

A naked/traditional bike would probably be kinder to the licence and wallet, but I can't blame you for looking at sports bikes. An SV would be a good starter bike, but with the new model out, resale value won't be as good as it used to be.

Get an old twin or 4, ride around on it, have fun. You'll enjoy any bike you get, so just get summat cheap.

Chances are you'll want to get something else within a year anyway. Everyone does.
