why are most beer bottles green?

The UV light makes the beer go 'off' quicker.

They use identical, brown bottles in Europe for their beer. The brown bottles are sent back from the pubs to be refilled. The green bottles are for export, these are not refilled.

So we have European home market Heineken bottles which get refilled:

I think we see the green ones more over here because it isn't really financially viable to ship the bottles back across the channel for refilling.
