People who ride through winter are mugs

I'd rather be a FWB than ride through winter. Will someone explain to me the fun of trying to keep your bike vertical through the ice and snow while I'm in the car nice and toasty listening to my radio?

Car takes me 2 hours to do the 16 mile rush-hour trip to and from work. Bike takes 30 mins round trip.
My textiles keep me warmer than my shitty Fiesta heater does.
My earplug headphones have better sound quality than my shitty Fiesta speakers.

Is it so hard to comprehend that people use bikes as a form of transport, rather than an extension of their penis?

Done the all year round thing for 6 years...i can assure you it sucks. Not so much being cold, but slippery road surfaces and localised ice make riding all year round a crapshoot.

The fun is comes in the summer when you "dust off the old girl" and "bring her out of hibernation"...

You see all the while you have been enjoying the wonders of Chris Moyles, sitting in traffic, we have been busy getting where we are going faster and cheaper, all the while finding how far we can go in the shit weather, so when the sun is out its nothing to run rings around you, completely taking the piss, usually on old winter hacks, overtaking on the outside line, braking later and on the power sooner.

But you enjoy the lovely smell of your cars heater, the soothing tones of chris moyles and enjoy the view of the back of the car infront for the next 3 hours of your life....

2nd year of riding through winter for me. don't intend on getting a car. i don't use my cbr, i use my work riding bike. tbh i don't care what happens to it, it's a cheapo bike. i don't care about being cold/wet etc... when i arrive at work. what i know is that i can leave the same time every morning on my bike and arrive on time. were i to do it in a car i'd have to leave half hour earlier.

I have no where (pressing) to go, i just enjoy dumping the clutch mid overtake and screwing the back around.

Well I have a car and 2 bikes (well a scooter, a car and a bike) and I still spend 90% of the time on 2 wheels.

It might be warm but sitting in a metal box listening to some bullshit local dj playing nasty dance tunes through paper speakers really isn't that great!
I'd rather get cold and put a little bit of rust on my bike then have 6 months of boredom..

I braved the cold for the sheer hell of it just ti ride the bike for a night shift, the road was as greasy as hell and the rear fishtailed a number of times on bends, with the front soon following suit.

I did find out the next morning that the front tyre pressure was just 7 psi, instead of the 36 that it is now.

It was an absolute nightmare and just no fun, so I agree with Joe on this one. The fact that I have to sit on the bike and warm it up for a good 5-10 minutes is the icing on the cake as work is just 10 minutes away (and thats sticking to the speed limits)

I rode the bike last year in pretty much any type of weather, but getting shrunken nads and frost bite of the fingers and toes just aint worth it.

No, its not pleasant at times, and it kills off your bike quick too. However, the riding experience you`ll get from doing it outweight the cons.

It makes the tea much better when you get one, and you can give out that hard man look when people ask if you`re cold, even if you are freezing.

As someone once said, its not a case of biking weather, more biking clothes. With the right gear on, who cares if its slippery,its fun

In the past I have often thought "I wish I was in a nice warm car", then I've got to a traffic jam and thought "Damn I'm glad I'm not one of those <rude word here> car drivers going to be stuck for hours"
As for the cold, well the £40 (second hand) BMW suit I got keeps the cold and wet out fine, along with a few other little bits it's not really a problem these days.

Also, I can't afford a car that can wheelie, stoppy or the like .

Hardly see any decent ice these days - and if we're talking proper ice, that scares me in a car as well - over a tonne of metal (not) under my control on a very slippy surface.

For the last couple of years I've had the choice of taking a car a van or a variety of bikes; most of the time I don't have to carry stuff I take the bike. Definitely if I want to go into town etc, then it's a lot less hassle than paying to park the car.

Bike = 30 second walk into work, while wearing stuff designed to keep me warm.

Car = several minutes walk into work to get me colder, plus time spent scraping the frost off the windows before the journies.

Suppose I could wear my bike gear to keep warm / dry walking to or from the car.

Cus some of us just have to.

Personally, I've had maybe, half a dozen rides where I've actually been cold. Only ever wearing summer gloves doesn't help my case.

However, for me, it's when I get off my bike with a smile on my face, no matter what the weather. Watching a cager running from their car into my work, complaining about the shite weather, then getting inside and continuing to complain about the 3hour tailback, down the same stretch of motorway I just covered in 35minutes...
I can be stressed to hell at work, ride home and have completely chilled out.

I'd not trade it in for anything. Give me the worst riding weather you can think of. I'll spin up the rear when I can, try pushing the bike as far as I can just to see if it'll give way and hell, if I drop it- Shit happens.

It's all about mental wellbeing. Driving any distance in a c*r has me ready to start banging my head off the steering wheel. It is in my best interests and the interests of the public as a whole for me to ride my bikes wherever possible. Otherwise road rage will ensue.

I also ride through winter. It was just a bit of fun because some people seem to get all high and mighty about the fact that they ride through winter.
