don't know much about them, is this one any good for the money?

https://cgi.ebay.co.uk/ZEON-HEART-RATE-MONITOR-WATCH-WITH-CHEST-STRAP_W0QQitemZ190065416844QQihZ009QQcategoryZ86962QQrdZ1QQcmdZViewItem

seems a better one than the cheap ones on ebay anyway like this

https://cgi.ebay.co.uk/New-Heart-Rate-Monitor-Watch-Calorie-Monitor-Black-UK_W0QQitemZ130063784735QQihZ003QQcategoryZ15277QQrdZ1QQcmdZViewItem

Or will that do the trick too?

Any ideas? Confused Smile

I go tone off Speshil Kay for a tenner. Arse of a thing.
My Polar is better.
Gym Machines pick up the transmitter too so you can go the machines with no hands.....
Wooooo.... Look Mum... Laughing

We have 3 polar's. The one i used to use was the most basic F1+

I just got another new nike one today. Its a triax, haven't tested it out but looks pretty good. The best one we have (polar) gives your weekly updates on performance etc and is really good.

Depends what you want it for. I just want to know my heart rate when i run (it beeps when i'm out of my zone) I would go for a well known make rather than a cheapo one just because it will probably be more accurate and work better.

A good site to look on is: https://www.heartratemonitor.co.uk

Got it now, nice bit of kit.. just set it all up, seems pretty easy to use etc.. ive set the high and low limits at 140 and 199

got that based on 220 - 21 = 199 and i think i did 199 - 80% - 40 ish so 199 - 40 ish is 140 ish lol something like that anyway i cant remember, but those are the limits i put does it sound about right?

Do you need to see a Dr. A Math Prof. Or a Personal Trainer? Laughing

Read up on it on polar website.
It is possible to kill your self using it.
Take it easy till you find out your own body limit.

Yeh your not older than me and if your level of fitness is average then MHR should be about 198-201. I usually try and stay at about 165 for distance running. Fat burning is about 150.

In theory the max heart rate of an individual is based on 220.

The age of the person is deducted from this to get your max heart rate. Now for the science part, you have to subtract the level of fitness. God knows what this supposed to be, but generally turns the max heart rate to more likely 170ish Wink

To burn fat, then yes this rate must be more in the regio of 40-60% of this range for prolonged periods of time.

In cardiology, I have on a regular basis nursed people with heart rates well in excess of 250bpm Wink They do have of course conduction defects and is not normal at all Laughing

As for monitoring heart rate, whatever happened to just using 2 fingers on the radial pulse?

What roughl should the maximum heart rate be for a reasonably fit person of 21?

Higher or lower than 180-ish bpm?

A few years back (well 7 Embarassed ) when I was 21, on a treadmill I could get my HR up to 174 and no higher, so a heart rate of up to 180 for a fit young dude or dudette is entirely possible.

Mine went up to 200+ when I thought I was pregnant a couple of months back.

Then it came back to normal when the Doc told me ''guys don't get pregnant.''

Same here Laughing

The fitter the person, the higher the max HR (and the quicker it gets there too) and the quicker it returns to normal. The resting HR will also be lower the fitter you are.

What limits, if any would be placed on someone who had an arterial septal defect 10 years ago, it having been operated on successfully?

I think you mean an atrial septal defect, bascially a hole in the heart.

They are treated by stitching a gauze / metal repair patch over the hole and then the body will naturally epithelise over this making it 'as good as new'.

In the short term the person should take things easy, but a decade later there should be not reason for them to being doing whatever they like.

Just listen to your body Thumbs Up

Yes I mean that one.

Thanks, had conflicting information from various specialist's over the years. I push my heart to quite large degree's, 175-ish bpm isnt uncommon.

I got a bargain combined heart-rate monitor and cycle computer from Lidl in the summer, came with a proper chest band for only about £10-15.

I haven't used the monitor side for a while but could easily get into the 180's if I tried hard enough, the maximum I got was 189. Very hard to sustain that for more than a minute though. After a while I could keep in the high 160's fairly easily for over an hour at a time. (I'm 22)
