I've changed address so I phone up MCE insurance to change my address with them, all going smoothly until they want £30 to let me change my details with them!

I'm going from a category F postcode to one less so I was expecting a refund from them not to pay out fees!

So now i'm £30 lighter all for the sake of them spending 5 minutes on the phone to me and sending me some updated documents.. Not going to use MCE insurance in 3 months time when my policy expires!

Its the same with every insurance broker/company. You will never get refunded money but sometimes they won't charge you admin fees if the difference in insurance price covers it.

Although 99% of insurance companies do this, their prices do vary, sometimes its £10, sometimes its £30 like you had to pay.

Well my advice would be to not move too often!!! Seriously though it is pretty normal for them to charge an administration fee, I don't agree with it as such, but I can see their point and its just one of those things we have to live with.

If I was you Al, I would be tempted to update my details when each policy comes up for renewal. That way you may avoid some of their fees. Just make sure that you update the logbook at the same time as the insurance cover.

So you get a job to cut the guy's lawn front and back.
He pays you the agreed fee.
He calls you up next day and asks if you can come round and tidy-up his rose bush.

You did the grass and gave him a discount.

Do you prune for free or charge him?

Oh the problems life throws at one. Laughing

so what about those bank administration fees of 30-50 quid for you being slightly late on a payment, or being a few quid short for a direct debit/cheque to clear?

any idea why thousands of people are taking them to small claims court over these charges?

because the charge for the service there must not be used to make profit. an automated system flags your account for the error, someone phones you about it. you get an automated letter about it. and a charge of £35 to cover that.

i agree that it's bs.

Going from Provisional to Full license didn't cost a penny unless i wanted new documents. But i guess if your moving address it makes your documents illegal more than changing license.

If it was me then I would probably 'forget' to change my policy documents until it was renewal time. What with moving house and everything, it must be easy to put off ringing round all of your insurers etc until later, and quite easy to forget that you haven't changed all of your policies.

I don't really encourage people to do this but if you had to get loads of documents changed then it would probably be more financially beneficial to leave it until the renewals. Obviously this doesn't work if youn have got 11 months left on your policy and neither would it be wise if you need to make a claim.

It wouldn't be too much of a problem as I'm at my Mums at the moment, so when I do move she will still be at the address, so will some of my stuff, so I will kind of still live here Smile

The main problem is that all the polices run out at differant times! so I'm gonna wait for the first one to end then pay to change the other two. I might even get rid of the car, the amount I use it.

What I don't understand is why they charge you to change it?
None of the other companys I have dealings with charge to change my address, banks, phone, ect.

Also does anybody know if you have to pay to change the address on your passport? Rolling Eyes
Mines run out so I'l need a new one anyway, but as I rent and move a lot Laughing sometimes by choice, sometimes not. It means I'm gonna have to get a new one every couple of years!

I think the insurance companies charge an admin fee because they have to send you some new paperwork through with your new address details on which is a fair enough because it does cost them something to do this work. Also I suppose that they have to check that your cover is still okay at your new address, ie you haven't moved to the Bronx or somewhere that your bike is more likely to get stolen.

I would change my insurance details as soon as I move house. One of my mates moved house a few years ago. 3 days later, his bike got nicked, and when he tried to claim, he didn't get a penny because his details weren't up to date!

When you buy insurance you get sent a copy of the policy. In it you will find details of what is and isn't covered, fees and charges plus other terms and conditions.

If you don't like the terms and conditions of the policy you have 14 days to change your mind, return the documents and get a refund.

When I moved house in 2005 I knew there would be admin fees payable - there were policies out there without fees, but I opted for the one with better cover. You get what you pay for.

It's the same with bank and credit charge fees - they're listed in the terms and conditions, so if you don't like them, take your account elsewhere.

Recently I picked up a £30 fee from my bank - my fault, I made a mistake and I knew there was a fee for going overdrawn. I've nobody to blame but myself.

Whilst the admin fee may seem steep, it is not as bad as it could be. You will find there are very few companies that do not charge admin fees.
I've been with MCE for the last five years and I can honestly say that the service I have had from them has been expemplary (especially when compared to my car insurance with Endsleigh who have been consistantly incapable of getting my name correct, using the correct address- AFTER I had changed my address over they continued to send letters to my previous residence). They have also had the cheapest policies with the best deals and they have a superb legal team Thumbs Up

Their pros outweigh the cost of an admin fee for me. I'd stick with them.

I've changed my e-bike policy details 3 times now (swapping it back and forth between the DR and SV) and they haven't charged me a penny for the 4 sets of documents they've sent.

But remember that e-bike don't include some other things with their policy - third party cover for riding other peoples' 'bikes for example.

I don't want to ride other people's bikes. I'm third party F+T anyway. E-bike are perfectly fine for insurance, i don't intend to make a claim anytime soon.

Carole Nash didn't charge when I changed address last year. Admittedly I moved a mile down the road and the premium was unaffected.

So anybody know if Bennetts charge for an address change? Smile

Thats who I'm insured with.
When I passed my test they sent me new documents for no extra charge, although my insurance didn't accaully get any cheaper, as you'd think a full licence holder would be less of a risk then an L-plater Confused
