Ok, mikes dog is coming to stay with us for a week or so soon and so the question of who to feed first was raised.

Mike is a firm believer that you should always eat before dogs because if they were in a pack they would believe that they're higher up the chain than you as such, I have no idea whether this is true or not.

I said that should this be the case then mingles should be fed first to let doggy know that mingles is top cat and not potential food but for some reason he disagrees on the lines that cats work the same way as dogs which I don't agree with at all.

Opinions...

I don't know about cats but me and my family always feed our dog after we had our meal. And it's true what he said. I don't know about cats though. I have had cats but don't remember much as I was a kid.

Just feed them in seperate rooms. Problem solved.

Not really a tough one is it.

Get the tight fucker to put his dog in kennels. It's hardly fair expecting a cat owner to look after a dog for week and if he's moaning about having the dog fed first, it's getting on for a piss take.

i dont think mingles is gonna enjoy having a dog stay over.

Feed them at the same time.

The dog will know your cat is 'top cat' by the way it has sharp bits. Razz

M1ke lives with shaun and only agreed to allow Shaun to get the kitten if it didn't effect his dog visiting from time to time.

Last time the dog was put in kennels she came out not being able to walk properly because her legs had seized up due to not having enough walks +being kept in a small cell like prison.

If any of you have watched the wildlife programmes you will have seen in the wild that it is the female lionesses that do the hunting, then the male lion eats before the female. Same with wolves.

This is where I have got my theories from for both cats and dogs.

Feed them in separate rooms and make sure the dog doesn't get a chance to eat the cats food.

In my experience, the cat will please itself whatever you do (cats always please themselves regardless). Also the dog will soon learn to leave the cat alone due to the afore-mentioned sharp bits.

Hmmm, depends how you feed them.

Our cats are fed morning and teatime but high-up so the dog can't reach their dishes. They also have a continuous supply of biscuits and fresh water available. Cats always get fed first, it's a kind of ritual that they put me through.

The dog has dried food, and that is available all the time for him to browse on so he doesn't have a mealtime as such. He does get scraps though, which are served to him after we have finished (obviously! Doh! ), and he always has water available too.

I was worried at first that by letting him feed like this the dog would gorge himself and get too fat, and he is a bit chunky for his breed, but he's pretty good at self-regulating now and doesn't tend to try and eat it all at once cos he knows it's not going anywhere. The big advantage for me is that with the option of eating he is less bored during the day when he is home alone, and therefore less likely to try and destroy the house!

As for our cat, he gets fed when he sits at his bowl and meows like a nutter.

Which is pretty much whenever we are in the kitchen. It could be why he eats between 2 and 3 cans of food in a normal day!

He weighs over a stone now!

I think you're looking into this too much. Laughing Laughing

Feed them in different rooms. Job done.

I have a big dog and 2 lil cats

Cats should always be fed first. This allows the dog to see that they are higher ranking than he is
(Feeding them in different rooms isn't really an issue here. The dog needs to SEE the cat eating before him. It's not a food stealing issue)

Same way as you would always feed your child first, and let her sit on the chairs.. but not the dog
She is 'better' than the dog

As your mates dog is fully grown (?) and not a puppy, it may be a bit difficult at first
Does the dog like cats?
It is easier if you start off with cats that can defend themselves somewhat and a lil puppy that is taught the way of the house from the start

Hope it goes well

I'd eat the Cat First, you may not have enough room for both if you start with the Dog..... Thumbs Up

Depends on the dog! Besides I find cats have a slightly sweeter taste so I'd save them for last.

Why?

Because dogs have packs, and ranks. That is all they see
They want to please their Alpha Leader, (owner), and his/her close pack members. These will usually be partner, kids, pets. Everyone you want the dog to respect in the home.
In our house the ranking is:
Me
OH
Daughter
Cats
Dog

Whomever eats first is 'best', as in the wild.
The pack leader gets the pick of the grub, the rest get the leftovers in order of their importance.
You eat last, you are bottom. Respect those above you

Dogs need to know their place in the pack. Once they know that they are not the alpha, they calm down and have a much happier stress free life. If you confuse them with actions that tell them they come first, you are making a rod for your own back. Things like feeding them scraps whilst preparing food, feeding them when you are eating, giving them a lot of fuss when you come home all give the dog the impression that their needs come first and will continue to demand it.

It's obvious cat's come over dogs!

a) Ever tried to train a cat to sit, lay, beg etc? It's just beneath them

b) Cats can go out for a shit on their own, you don't need to follow them with a Tescos bag and have the great job of picking up a still warm turd.

c)Cats have been worshiped as gods for years. This is because they are gods, they've just got bored recently so have decided to sit in a warm house and lick their arse for a few millenia until they take over again.

d) Dogs smell! Mr. Green

Who do you think would win between a dog and a cat?
Usually the dog

Dogs are powerful animals, capable of a lot of damage, (as has been seen in recent press)
They need to know that they are in the home as our companion and friend, and because WE allow them to be in OUR home

If they get too big for their boots... you are doomed

Ever watched Dog Borstal?
Shocked

Jeez
