Lucky me got this for christmas..

Ohhh it looks like hard work! Laughing

Very interesting though, the raceing looks bad enough but the torrent of shite you have to get through to even be on the race is astounding.. its not suppriseing only 40% finish! allot of these are the best in the world at what they do yet a few stages in there droping like flys, broken limbs, comas not to mention mangled bikes..

Very interesting though, i'm sure some of you caught it on sky but i think they probably lowered the ammount of swearing for the broadcased one.. but then if i could hear a beeping signal meaning theres a car comeing up behind, probably doing 100, on dirt, and they can't see you.. i think i'd be swearing a bit too..

I got it for my birthday a couple of weeks back.... I liked it (watched all the episodes in a couple of days), but it didn't have the magic of long way round for me (blatantly making the box look the same and having big ewan show his face here and there tainted it a little as well IMO).

It was interesting how the dynamic changed... in long way round mcgregor was the star and Charlie was his humble mate tagging along in his shadow... now Charlie is the celeb face and the other riders seem to resent him a little (I thought it was pretty harsh early on when they said if Charlie's bike breaks down, the other rider will have to give him his!).

Still what those guys put themselves through is insane, I knew it was tough but I had no idea how tough until seeing that.

Got it for Chrimbo too, watched 5 episodes so far, really enjoying it Thumbs Up

Looks extremely tough, and those cars flying through metres from the bikes, fook me! Shocked

I hoped to get the DVD for Christmas, but no. Laughing

Edit: I am excited for the guys getting ready for this years Dakar. They will be leaving Lisbon on the 31st Dec!

Yeah, the rider your talking about was Andy Caldecott, unfortunetly he died in a nasty spill at the 2006 Dakar (as shown in the programme). I think yeah it was really good, i like the way its edited together, however i think the helmet cam footage wasnt well utilized. I agree aswell that because Ewan wasnt in this one, it was a bit more balanced between Charlie and the rest of the people, however i did miss Ewan this time!

Ahh i didn't realise it was the same guy Sad

Actually now i think of it charlie broke his hand and finished the stage Shocked not like you can rest your arms..

Yeh apparently ewan was asked but said he'd not cause he wasn't up to the task, he only poped up i think to do them a favour druming up press support and stuff for the guys..

It would be interesting just to watch the unedited helmet cam footage of the race..

Yeah I read the book and managed to catch half the episodes on Sky but have to agree that as a book and TV programme it dos'nt have a patch on long way round.
Agree that the Dakar has to be the most insane thing possible and is only available to rich play boys and girls, even the privateers must be loaded I should imagine. Although the book dos'nt highlight this.
Charlies £6k bike ended up as a £25k version!

The girl Patsy Quick or something said bottle of champage cost her £150,000. So it cost her almost £40,000 to do one Dakar event as I think that was her fourth attempt to finish .. not the cheapest heh..

The book gets better but it is a bit of a slog. And, yes they are all mad. having the rally cars cutting you up must be terrifying. It is a rich persons event but then so is all racing, to a degree.

I have just begun watching the the episodes of this. It is really good.

I must say though, that I am glad I read the book beforehand, as the TV/DVD episodes do not show the whole story. There are many things in the book that are not shown in the program. Hence reading the book beforehand has given me the "whole picture". It makes for a more complete story of their journey to Dakar.

Also it is fun to read the book and imagine the scenes being described and then to actually see them later on in the show.

I've watched it all but it got on my nerves a bit. Boorman was a whingey poo face through the whole thing, guess he may of been putting it on for cameras though. The camera man was just a pillock. The only one I did like was the "pro" I think he realised the other 2 didn't have a chance but realised he got a free shot at the dakar Razz.

Still a good DVD though and glad I got it for christmas!
Cheers
Alex

I downloaded it cos im tight. Was a good dvd, but the co producer who was in the x5 comes across as a bit of a cock at times. I especially liked it when the rear wishbone broke in the desert and he was like "cant you fix it with all your expertise" The wishbone was in about 8 pieces. Laughing

Who? Russ Malkin? I thought that about him untill i met him, he is a sound bloke couldn't get more down to earth. What you have to remember is he and the others were under pressure to get everything right. Thumbs Up
