I'd love to know what you all think about having a holiday here
https://www.penlan.co.uk/the-park.html
with a view to using it as a base for touring the area.

I know that many many people ride from England into Wales just to go riding, but I don't think that happens much south of Brecon.
Out here, I'd expect people to come down, stay somewhere and then go exploring.

What makes you decide to go abroad or stay here during the summer?.
Where have you been in Wales?.
Where have you stayed?.
What do you need as a motorcyclist on holiday?
What do you most often lack as a motorcyclist on holiday?.
How many of you go on holiday as a group?.
What would be your upper limit for accomodation?.
Bearing in mind the speed limits, how far would you expect to ride in a day whilst on holiday?.
Would you be interested in activities that don't involve bikes?.
Would a workshop or secure parking be a decision-changing factor?.

We're in the process of buying this park, and I'm trying to establish potential income streams, then assess their cost-benefit impact on our existing resources.

I know these roads, and apart from some dodgy surfaces there's some outstandingly beautiful scenery, and it's not far from Brecon and their traditional stomping grounds.
It's closer to Cardigan, with its beautiful rivermouth harbour and surrounding beaches (christ, I sound like a fecking timeshare git).

I've done enough riding to know what i want at a cafe when i stop for food and drink, but i've never been on holiday on the bike, so I don't know what's desirable and what can be offered that usually isn't.

The more replies i get, the more i can find out how the park, club, pool and other stuff can be used.
Thanking you in advance...

Some very good questions Al Smile

What makes me go abroad for summer? Simple, the weather. We had 9 days in France last year and it was beautifuly sunny every day.

Where have I been in Wales? Mostly the south, but I have been walking in the Brecons and Snowdonia as few times.

Where have I stayed? God knows, it was years ago!

What do I need as a motorcyclist? Easy, a motorcycle! Laughing Seriously though, somewhere secure for the bike, or something substantial to lock it to. Somewhere within walking distance to get drunk and eat should I want to go out in the evening.

What do I most often lack? Hmm, that's a toughy. Probably the whole being close to beer thing.

How many of us go in a group? Last year there were 6 of us in the group that went to France, this year we are looking at 2 or 3 more probably.

What would my upper limit be? Probably no more than £150 a head for a week. But it would need to be somewhere nice for that money. The place we were at in the south of France was £100 each and was quite nice (pool, garden kitchen etc.)

How far would I ride in a day? That depends on what the plan is. If we are going somewhere to look at something, then however far it is to the thing that we are going to look at. If we are 'just riding' probably no more than 150 miles.

Activities without bikes? Yes, absolutly. Haven't I already mentioned beer? But seriously, I am always interested in trying something new.

Would a workshop/parking influance my decision? If it was a chocie of two places that were exactly the same (location, cost, facilities) then yes. Otherwise, not really, no.

I hope this is of some use to you Smile
I honestly couldn't see myself going there for a week as I can't see how I would fill my time, however as it's not too far away from us, I could see myself going there for a long weekend if the price was good.

What makes you decide to go abroad or stay here during the summer?. The basic human instint to explore and find new and interesting things. For me, it is also a chance to go and travel places where there are no tourists and you get to see what it is really like (May not apply in Wales)

Where have you been in Wales? Swansea, not on a holiday though.

Where have you stayed?. No where. I consider staying overnight in Wales highly dangerous Laughing

What do you need as a motorcyclist on holiday? A bike is the only real thing you need.

What do you most often lack as a motorcyclist on holiday?. A nice hotel and the internet. Really... there is nothing that I lack on motorbike holiday apart from luggage space.
Also, I would like to add that it was hard to get food to cook on our stove that was different to tomato sauce and pasta and ham and cheese sandwiches

How many of you go on holiday as a group?. Last year it was 2, this year it is 4 people on 3 bikes. If it was my choice, I would prefer to travel in pairs

What would be your upper limit for accomodation?. In europe, I would be looking at around 10-15 pp euros for a campsite and 25 euros pp for a hotel

Bearing in mind the speed limits, how far would you expect to ride in a day whilst on holiday?. If it was a fast paced ride, I would be looking around 100-150 miles maximum a day (there and back) but if it was relaxed riding, I would ride a maximum of 500 miles in a day to get somewhere.

Would you be interested in activities that don't involve bikes?. Of course, just because i ride a bike does not mean I am against anything non-bike related.

Would a workshop or secure parking be a decision-changing factor? A workshop would be a big factor when choosing a campsite over another. Remember though, if people don't know you have a workshop then they may not visit. I think newer and more valuable bikes than mine would prefer secure parking but it is not a worry for me.

As a last note, I think that the camping profession would be high risk and there are sessons that people prefer. I mean, what would you do for winter?

I can't guarantee you head, although having heard some of the stories about Cardigan's night-life...

Thanks all, there's some good stuff there.

The most noticable difference that i can see straight away is the issue of drying facilities.
I don't have to worry too much about this, as I've never had to use the bike, and so the leather jacket, day after day (more's the pity) and it's looking like a bit of a common theme amongst the many replies I've had.

It shouldn't take too much to do either, you'd just need one room with a dehumidifier, lock it up overnight and they should be ok in the morning...

Someone here the other day did comment on bikers as a good target market;
"They're all lawyers and solicitors and doctors and dentists, aren't they, on their Harleys and the coloured ones, isn't it, so they've all got money, haven't they...".

...which clashed immeadiately with what i've read and experienced.

I mean, I'd say I'm a biker, but i've not thrown a leg over since i had to push the bloomin 400 for 2 miles, coz i've not had two farthings to rub together. Most of the stories i've heard of involve near-backruptcy due to rear-set addiction, or chronic Showa defficiency Laughing

Most replies have assumed that camping would be the order of the day. I wonder if i can't persuade otherwise.

The lodges on the park sleep between 4 and 8 depending on the size of lodge and whether you want to include the living room as a sleeping area or not.

I think it's safe to say that the prices would range from around £150 per week at the beginning and end of the season (ie in the snow) to about £500 at the very peak (when you could sleep under the bike Laughing )

I'm wondering whether the location is important good or important bad. It's Cenarth, by Cardigan, so it's about;
20 (safe) minutes from Carmarthen
30 minutes from Fishguard
30 minutes from Pembrey
40 minutes from St Davids
1 hour from Aberystwyth
1 hour from Brecon
1 hour from Saundersfoot/Tenby
2 hours from Anglesey
3.5 hours from Oulton Park

You could shave lots of time off there if you ride like the devil or you could explore the coastal area from St davids in the south to Ynyslas Borth in the north comfortably in a couple of days.

I don't want to seem like i'm asking for anything, or trying to force the idea, but if 4 people came down at the height of summer, for the 6 days, you'd have a lodge with 2 double or twin bedrooms, your own kitchen/diner, your own bathroom with shower, secure overnight parking, a club with bar, cinema, shop, internet access, swimming pool, sauna, nearby small village with mini-market and 2 pubs and tea room and coracle fishing and quite lovely waterfalls under a beautiful little bridge...

All for £20 per night per person or less. That's not too much is it?

I think we'd have to look at the food in the kitchens properly. Trad pub grub with modern alternatives; pie, steak, fish'n'chips, salads, spaghetti and some vegetarian options too. Local beef, venison, smoked salmon, trout, lobster, prawns, fish...
