Presuming you don't have them already installed, download em and use em regularly.

Think he means Spybot S&D?

https://www.download.com/Ad-Aware-SE-Personal-Edition/3000-8022_4-10045910.html?part=dl-ad-aware&subj=dl&tag=top5 Adaware

https://www.safer-networking.org/en/index.html Spybot

Run scan in safe mode, turn system restore off just to be sure...make sure you update both programs before scanning.

Then download windows defender(google it) and install it to keep you protected.

And when you've got rid of it, if you dont have a 'paid-for' firewall get yourself Comodo Firewall (link below) or a cr*cked version of one ...

https://www.personalfirewall.comodo.com/

Comodo is Ranked 1st for Free Firewalls in my book and many others, then next down the line is one called ZoneAlarm ...

Then for an Anti virus, get Antivir:

https://www.free-av.com/

One of the only free-av's with "live protect" ...

As to getting rid ... 'Ad-aware' and 'Spybot Search & Destroy' are the best as well as the Anti Virus ...

Um....no! I thought Windows would automatically do the updates straight away? How do I get the most recent updates then? Should that fix the problem?

Oh yes, forgot CCleaner ...

As to AVG, that's what i used to advise people, but now i tell them to use Antivir ... Much better free Anti-Virus with "live protect" which AVG doesn't have.

As to updates, only do this if u have a Kosha copy of XP otherwise you will need to do some Registry h*cking ...

Did you reformat before you reinstalled XP ?

Anyway if none of theses programmes are working why not reformat again ?
Once you've installed XP again, the first thing you should do is protect the PC before you do anything else.

yea you must have windows SP2 then download/install the updates as there diff updates which are specificly for SP2

im sure you must have it tho otherwise you'd have seen it on the updates page but its 266mb

have you checked to see if this is in your add/remove list?

also check your MSCONFIG.......type that into the run command to see if its starting up when your pc starts if it is then untick it just incase its that thats triggering it to start all over again

once ad-aware has finished scanning MAKE SURE YOU CHECK THE BOX'S TO REMOVE THE INFILTRATIONS! Soooooooo many people just close the bloody thing after it's scanned and nothing gets removed.

You have updated the definitions on Adaware and spybot before you did the scan havn't you?

Did they find anything?

If all the others are not working try this.....a-squared. It has found a few that the others have missed before now.

i was the one who installed XP, it does have SP2 and i turned on Automatic updates.
Colin, sorry i would have installed a few programs to keep it safe but i thought you would have been able to do this yourself.

i recommend you install Microsoft Defender
https://www.microsoft.com/athome/security/spyware/software/default.mspx

and have you installed you AV program yet? if you need one you could get AVG Free.
https://free.grisoft.com/softw/70free/setup/avg75free_432a904.exe

both are good and free Mr. Green

ps. stay off the dodgy porn sites with .exe downloads lolol
