I currently have a SCSI drive (internal) and want to add another hard drive as a slave. I was having a look online at SCSI drives but they all seem fucking expensive. Laughing

SATA and IDE drives are much cheaper. What I want to know is will I be able to plug in a SATA or IDE drive into my existing system? Or will the existing cables not fit?

Cheers.

Assuming you have the right connections, you should be able to add another drive without problem. Windoze requires drivers before it will recognise SATA drive though.

they won't fit unless you've got ide ports on the board. What type of scsi interface is it? ide-to-scsi adaptors exist, but I've never tried them myself and I've no idea how much they'd cost.

Last I checked, the second hand prices of scsi drives were pretty good. I've got a shelf full of high-voltage differential scsi drives you could have for nothing, but they weigh about 40 kilos and the combined storage is only 30 gig

best way to tell mate is to check the specification of your motherboard.

if you can post up what make and model it is then we can tell if its got IDE or SATA on board.

if it has neither then you can still add IDE or SATA drive but you would need to buy an IDE or SATA controller that plugs into a PCI slot on your motherboard.

Thanks for the replies guys!

The mobo is an Asus A7V133. (It is an old computer! Razz)

I have dug out the manual for the motherboard and checked the component diagram. It says that the hard drive connectors are "2 IDE connectors (UltraDMA/100/RAID 0 Support)".

So I guess an IDE drive will work with the motherboard.

Thumbs Up

When you install a IDE hard drive go into your bios and make sure that the SCSI is still enabled as the primary boot device as sometimes when you add IDE to a SCSI set up you get all kinds of problems with it
