I have to be honest and say it hasnt happened to myself but a good friend has just got a puncture straight in the middle of her nearly new tyre.

She took the wheel to a car tyre centre and they say they can repair it by rubbing a rough spot on the inside of the tyre and inserting a long piece of rubber with a flange that sticks to the inside - much the same as they do on car tyres. They called it a dog d*ck Laughing

Is this safe to do on a bike?

Hi

Yes, and done fairly regularly. However there are restrictions on what tyres should be repaired (Z rated tyres cannot be repaired according to the British Standards, but no legal reason they cannot be repaired).

All the best

Keith

So she would be going against the say so of british standards?

What if she had an accident and they found the repaired tyre.Would this cancel out the insurance or could she just play dumb and pretend she didnt know it had been repaired?

Had a Z rated tyre repaired using the mushroom style plug, was told they shouldn't do it but they would if I wanted them to.

The only time the insurance would check that was if the tyre was a contributing cause of an accident. Wink

Yes, as far as I know.

Difficult to know. They might get arsey, but they don't really have a leg to stand on unless the puncture repair failed and caused the accident.

All the best

If the tyre wasnt the cause of the accident I seriously doubt theyd be stripping the bike to check the insides of the tyres for repairs. Laughing

tyre 'plugging' onZR rated tyres me thinks is a lil' illegal. i usually stick some that old slime/ultraseal or that gack in there BEFORE i get a puncture, i no its not alot help after you get the puncture. i managed to get away with it on a slow puncture, had to put it in and throw the wheel back on the fazer before it went down again and push that crap around the tyre to seal it.

.. sorry i had a point, but i have lost track.
