Clipping car mirrors

Would you bother stopping for this?

Happened on the way back from uni tonight when I was filtering through stationary traffic to the front of the lights. Thing is it only slightly brushed against it and I thought it not worth it to stop as it was dark and traffic all around.

I wouldn't clip it in the first place. If it's a tight squeeze i tuck in and wait.

It might not seem like a big deal to the biker but when a new mirror for a modern car can cost as much as £150 from a dealer you can understand why a car driver doesn't see it as so trivial.

I clipped someones mirror a few months ago, albeit not very hard. I stopped, and looked at the driver and they either didnt realise i'd hit it or were too frightened to bother pulling in. So i thought well they aint that bothered and rode off.
But in general, if i fuck up i'll pay for it. So next time if i hit one i'll sort it, but since hitting one i dont go for small gaps anymore.

If I've actually damaged one I'd like to think I would stop, although I've not actually done it. I've very lightly clipped a couple that both times the driver had chance to do something about but neither seemed bothered.

I would, but then again i'm not one for getting into such tight spaces.

What would you do if a car nudge your number plate, or slightly bent an indicator? and in either instance snapped any of mentioned parts?

I'm sure you would want to at least speak to them...

I clipped a mirror with my elbow for the first time the other day. Only brushed off it so I didn't bother stopping, if damage was done I'd stop.

I now tuck my mirrors in whilst filtering through 'tight' places for this very reason.

I managed to completely rip someones mirror off with my bar end they had just cut me up so i thought it lesson learnt for them and carried on

My wing mirrors are over 200 quid before youve painted it or fitted it. If I clouted someones mirror I would at least apologise and naievly I would like to think someone else would do the same if they hit mine.

At the end of the day I never asked you to filter past me and the fact you cant judge the width of your bike does not mean I should suffer any loss. Catching it with the elbow of your leathers is forgiveable as its unlikely to scratch, but hitting it with your bar ends/mirrors etc is likely to cause damage. Also take it as a lesson in filtering, if your clipping cars then how much does the one miopic driver halfway up the que need to shuffle to right for a better view in order to knock you off?

Not really an issue for me on my KLE, as my mirrors are high up enough to swoosh over the majority of those on cars. Only vans cause me problems, and in those situations the danger that they might hit my shoulders and head is likely to give me pause for thought long before my mirrors are put at risk.

I've clipped a few mirrors in my time, but have never damaged them, so not felt the need to stop. Were someone to act in accordance with Whosethedaddy's pube-grabbing posturing, I'd be forced to make sure that their mirrors being whacked would be the least of their worries.

It was a simple question, and there was no need to bore us all with your 'hard' reply - especially as it elicits equally tedious responses like mine. Just in case you had forgotten, the imaginary biker swinging in your mighty grip from his short and curlies was assumedly filtering because you were part of a traffic jam. As such, unless you run like the T1000 when you spy an opportunity to play with a biker's bits, you are unlikely to be catching up with the bike any time soon.

On the original topic, surely causing actual damage to another vehicle comes under the legislation governing road accidents, and thus you have little choice but to pull over?

Going back a few weeks now, there was a crash on the M4 and everyone was being forced off at J13 (westbound). 'bout half way between J12 and J13 I caught the eyes of a BMW driver staring in his mirror at me, as I got towards the rear of his car he jumped forward and across into my path... Thankfully, he didn't hit me side on, but I did hit his mirror - I didn't stop right away, incase he got out, but his mirror had been ripped almost completely off. It was a new car too.

In that case, where he appears to have done it on purpose, I'd hope I did more damage - But if I'd simply tried to force my way through, I'd at least offer an apology and take what was coming.

In London I'd often turn my mirrors inwards to fit through smaller gaps.

I have to drive down an alley to to get my bike in and out of my back yard cars park in the middle of the alley,
so i have to twist my mirrors in to get past,
I have asked them to park to one side, but they for some reason, dont,
so every time i squiz past i give them a good wack with my arm ,
I noticed one nowis held on with tape,

what do u think i should do !

Beat them there one day and park so they can't get past and leave.. They'll soon get the message and park sensibly!

Ive lightly clipped a tatty old South Gloucester van mirror that caused no damage. I stopped when I herd the bloke shout 'Oi!' but when I turned to see him laughing and pointing at me I carried on, the gap was big enough, just had one of those low speed wobbles.

Id always stop as I had to replace my Renalt Laguna mirror which cost 130 quid thanks to a power ranger on a sunny sunday afternoon. Very annoying!!

Cliped a few mirrors over the years and have grinded the FX400r exhaust on the side of a white van before but he was just asking for it.

ive hit one before, and it bent forward and snapped back into place (i have no idea what i did, there was well enough space to pass). it was pulling up to traffic lights too, so i had to stop right next to him. i turned round to be met with frowns and worded insults (couldnt hear him) i shrugged apolagetically, and patted the bonnet then swifty turned off.

Clipped a few with bar-ends. Think everytime was travelling at walking pace through stationary traffic so plenty of time for the 'victim' to voice complaint if they wanted to.

If I caused real damage to someone's mirror I'd stop and appologise, and offer to compensate them. Or at least I hope I would.


To be honest, I find cars have to be right at the edge of their lanes to cause really tight gaps for me to deal with, so I don't feel that guilty going past tilting the bike to clear their mirrors.

I've clipped car mirrors numerous times, never damaged them though.
If possible, I will apologise to the driver.

I find that both car and bike mirrors are quite tough and flexible, so when the two collide there is a lot of give there.

Anyone had their mirror hit by a car? Had it happen to me once on the M4 bridge toll boothes, caught me by suprise and almost off-balance. I was a bit annoyed so tapped my knuckles on his window to register it but that was that, wasn't claiming compensation for a minature scratch.

It's best to avoid clipping wing mirrors, however sometimes it's unavoidable when filtering, for example when you're moving and the car next to you starts moving unexpectedly and it's not in a straight line.

Clipping wing mirrors is obligatory when you see that the driver of the car is on the phone....the shock of the clatter usually reminds him that he is not in full control of a vehicle.
