the bike that i'm having the problem with is an 89' honda cg, when i started it up today after doing some work on the engine, i was moving the bike out to the front of my house to get ready for a quick test ride, i noticed that there was grey smoking coming out of the air filter box. It's not the first time it's done it either, i was riding it yesterday and i had to drop it off at a relatives house because i didn't want to ride it in that condition. i've opened the box now and i was going to wash the filter elements, but wasn't sure on what to wash it in,and with. Don't suppose anyone know's of any possibilities of why it's smoking? My dad mentioned possible fuel getting back into the filter, if this is the case how could i make sure it is this and how could i fix it?

If there's anyone who can help me out, it'd be much appreciated.

well fuel shouldn't be spitting back into the filter, but i suppose a tiny bit could "splash back" from the carb.

I assume its a foam element. To clean these, get the foam filter off its metal housing, and put some petrol on it and squeeze it out, to clean it. Let the filter then dry (ie in the sun). Then oil it with gear oil (80W90 normally), squeeze out the excess, and pop it back on the filter housing. sorted.

well i found a few problems with the filter and cleaned it (cheers robby), the mong that had last worked on the bike had tried to superglue the tube to the carb from the filter box, plus the fact that he obviously couldn't fit the tube properlyonto the box, leaving a big gap to let un-filtered air in and out of the filter box. either way it's fixed now.

whan starting my mates kit car backfires in the carbs and sets the airfilters on fire ocasionaly most of the time they just smoke though Laughing
