Decided to build an engine up for my pit bike from bits that I was given but cant get the gears to work, it's the first thing I'm trying to do, because without the gears I'm wasting my time with the rest of the engine!

I know the gears are on the shafts in the right order and they all move freely where they should, the selector drum is all in one piece but I cant get it to change gear, is there a certain way of putting it all together or something? (like set the gears to neutral or something?)

Its got my head up my arse!!

Thanks
Rob

You'll probably just find that you can't get it to change because all the gears are stationary - exactly the same as you may have difficulty getting a bike into gear when the it's not running. Try jiggling the input and output shafts while changing gear, you might line up enough splines and dogs to get it to work.

Other than that, you need to make sure that the drum can rotate freely to each of it's positions. If it can do that, then you need to find out which one of the selector forks is unable to slide, and then why.

Thanks for your reply

Had another go tonight, the selector drum is all good, nice and free, I got it to change gear but it keeps jamming, you can't turn the sprocket or it will go half a turn then jam

One of two things is going to happen here, I'm either going to take my good engine to bits and see exactly how it goes or chuck the lot in the bin and forget about another engine

Thanks
Rob
