Right, now I've got that off my chest here we go:

I got up this morning and checked the weather on the BBC website. Sunny intervals and a wind speed of 17mph - not a bad day to take the bike to work I thought. (First real ride in 2 1/2 months, I lost my confidence due to a family member having a serious accident but eventually decided to carry on biking)

I get to work and all is fine but now I'm facing gail force on the way home, something I don't want on my first ride in a while and the BBC still reckon winds of 17mph - Bloomin' idiots the lot of them!

The BBC has many many faults, but the one you pointed out isn't one of them. Smile

Yes, altough on the telly at least the BBC weather people are meteorologists, wheras some of the itv channels, they are just presenters reading out loud.

For my area, Bedford, they often overestimate how cold it's going to be for some reason. Maybe they base it on the rural areas.

that's funny. The weather forecast I saw said sunny intervals with 17mph winds except for a particularly nasty patch of cloud in the north west that seemed to be following some bloke round on an nsr Shocked

I must admit I've done a similar thing. I wasn't going to ride into work today due to the weather warnings earlier this week. This morning I turned on the BBC and they managed to change my mind. Now it's a howling gale outside and I'm a little dissapointed... Although I can't imagine it will be as bad as last week so I should be ok. Tomorrow looks like a nightmare so I'm getting the train, which is fine by me as I need a hair cut and I can nip in on the way home.

Forecasting is not an exact science - the only guaranteed way to know what the weather's doing is to look out of the window.

Thats the point... It said 17 which is fine by me I rode all last week and it was up to 28 last Thursday. But the windows in my offive have started shaking and when I went for my lunch it certainly was just 17mph winds out there!

Tomorrow looks like a foolish day to ride!

I once read that forecasting weather for the UK is probably the hardest job of forecasting in the world. With the erratic weather patterns from the Atlantic and with the often cold swoops of weather from the East, warmth from the South. Predicting the wind wrongly can make a weather forecast turn out to be the complete opposite.

Obviously the positioning of the jet stream at the time of forecasting will make a hell of a difference.

If I was a forecaster in the UK, i'd just say "Expect wind and rain". Rolling Eyes

its usually very good and accurate and gives a local reading in your area
The observation point of my area is within a couple of miles from me and i can go outside with a wind meter and get near the exact same wind reading as they do Laughing

I never trust the BBC anymore... their weather predictions are normally way off.

Someone said it was the MET office's fault... then why depending on what website you go on, do the forecasts change?

As already pointed out, i find that uk.weather.co.uk is MUCH MUCH better at giving an accurate forecast.

Ditto here. I booked today off work thinking it'd be the worst weather of the week (I was due a day off anyway) but when I left the orifice last night I had a horrendous ride home. I had to keep stopping and pulling over. Rubbish.

Funny also, because look North (BBC up here), was giving out gale warnings and warning high sided vehicles and motorcycles about the danger.

just took the dog for a walk and its carnage where i live - there is a few houses with tiles off, scattered on drives and paths - and loads of fences down!!!

to top it off it was my bin collection today - i found my wheely bin wheeling itself down the road!!! Mr. Green
