bike with no V5C

From a Salvage yard , looks like it'll make a very very good project , (frame wheels forks , zorst , chain but no engine but a southern breaker has an engine for me)

now what hoops do I have to jump through to get my a V5C in my name?

Any suggestions?

I think you can apply for one with the DVLA, a post office should have the forms you need.

Yes - apply direct to the DVLA. See www.dvla.gov.uk for details.

Small point though: Are you sure the 'bike is legit? Done a HPi check to make sure it's not stolen etc.?

The fact that there's no V5C with it sets alarm bells ringing for me...

Bought from a salvage yard though, so doesnt that transfer all blame onto the salvage yard comany.

So it's not the fault of the breakers for selling/handling stolen goods..... i thought that having the bike confiscated and having no comeback only aplied to private sales. You should at least be able to get the money back from the breaker if it did turn out that way.

Far as I'm aware, if no party is aware it's stolen (assuming a different scenario to this one), the breakers can't be done for anything, they'd keep the money you paid for it, and you'd lose the bike AND your money.
It's why you should always get these things checked before buying privately. Responsibility lies on you totally.

Of course, you could try take the breaker to court, but you'd need proof they knew it was stolen before they sold it to you.

If the history is known, and it's stolen/recovered, there should be a logbook- Give the DVLA a call and see what they say - It might have been recovered but written off at the same time. Then the V5 would be sent back to the DVLA, and you'd need to re-register the bike*.

* Do NOT let the people at your local DVLA centre tell you the bike will need some VOSA check before they can re-issue a registration - The cow at the Reading office told me this, and wasted my time chasing various people for this check, only to find out that bikes DO NOT need the check done - All you need is a valid MoT (and obviously insurance to TAX it).

It depends on whether the VIN plate is still on the frame alone. if it is you should be able to apply to re-register it with the original reg no, I think it still needs an inspetion though but not as stringent as the SVA, it's more of an "identity check".

If there is no info available to trace it back to the original reg you will need an SVA and you will only get a q-plate reg.

Itchy, HPI the bike yourself off the 'FRAME & ENGINE numbers' NOT NOT NOT NOT NOT a reg number!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!

The V5C will be attained about 6 weeks later after you complete the form from the post office or DVLA in Manchester on Chester Rd.
The new V5C will cost you £21

2 weeks for my last one to come though for a cat C bike (about 3 months ago). Costs nothing if it's a cat c or you have the green bit of the v5, otherwise you have to pay).

Only thing i'd be weary of is if it's been declared as scrapped. Not sure how you stand if this is the case.
