Furred mirrors

Has any one else had problems with mirrors 'furring'?

It's happening at the edges of my mirrors (see attached photo) in a number of places and the areas affected seem to be getting bigger. There's no change in the surface of the mirror - this isn't muck that can be scrapped off.

Any one know what causes this?

Good question, one of my mirrors is doing the same thing.

Anyone got any ideas?

Think its where the glass seperates from the coating on the back.
If you've ever broken a mirror you will see what I mean.

I'd suggest that water has gotten between the layers and you now have fungis my friend.

And no it's not like last summer and that bird you met on the beach. Cream wont fix this one up.
Luckily enough for you it doesnt come with an annoying itch either.

Maybe you can get something like a shower screen detergent and see if that gets rid of the fungus. Not sure if it will effect the back coat of the mirror though.

Think you will have to face facts that its probably gonna just keep gettin worse.
If it bothers you ....wreckers my old mate wreckers.

What you've said about layers separating makes sense.

I'll be back to the Honda dealership for a replacement under warranty - they've not been struck or abused in any way, so I'm hoping for a simple replacement job.

Yeah, it's just water getting between the mirror and the backing stuff. Happened on my bike, it gets really bad after a while. But I was quoted about £6 to have a duplicate cut, though I never got round to it before the bike died.

It will be from any hose I expect, and rain. If water gets in behind the mirror and stays there it will creep under the edge of the backing material and start spreading.

You could probably solve this entirely by doing a careful job with a glue gun round the edge. Smile

Was wondering, my mirrors are 10 years old in June and arn't furred at the edges, I don't pressure wash geeperz though, doubt the previous owners would have either not having done enough distance ot get it dirty. /shrug/

Mines actually worse than that on wait for it - a 7 month old CBR600RR.
They dont build em like they used to thats for sure

No to pressure washer, but yes to hose. It's used most days to commute on and is left outside during the day (garaged when home or at night) so has seen a reasonable, although not excessive, amount of rain.

Mine's a 6 month old CBR600RR!

Gone back and queried it with the dealer crm250? A design fault surely - that isn't normal wear and tear. My old Honda CBF500 didn't have any such issue.

It's something that's 'grown' pretty quickly. I can understand why it might have happened, but I don't think it should have happened. Never seen it on a car.

Although it's cosmetic more than anything at the moment, I suspect it will grow further. As I can see more than my elbows in them, I'd not be happy.

I'll see what the dealer says when I'm next in.

On a bike that new I'd be wanting Honda to replace the parts.

To be honest, I was all ready to say that they are only £30 each for the whole mirror unit, but seriously on a six month old bike you'd be best going straight back to the dealer. After all the worst they can say is no - if you don't ask, you don't get. Thumbs Up

Yup my 5.5 month old CBR600rr has started doing the exact same thing about 3 weeks ago on the one mirror and the 2nd mirror started last week

Must be a design flaw or bad batch of mirrors

Any one got a CBR600RR less than 5 months old with dodgy mirrors? Laughing

I agree with you Annabella - they're only mirrors, but clearly poor quality ones and I will be seeking a replacement under warranty.

I was thinking of seeing the winter through and then getting them replaced in march/ april time, let me know how you get on (those of you getting them replaced under warrenty)
