I saw the video the other day and I was surprised at the way it made
me feel Shocked I have seen some TV programmes about him and he is
an out & out barbarian. I think he deserves to be take off this planet etc but
when I watched how it was done I was quite sickened Confused now before
I watched I would have said he deserves everything he gets etc but
the manner in which it was done made me think we were meant to
be better than him so why was it not done more clinical and more
professional, and to see a real hanging made me think there must a better
way, so I am now fighting the he deserves it and the how can we be better
than him if we do it back Confused Never thought I would have felt like this
about the barbarian, a hint of sypathy Confused Confused very small hint but a hint Confused

I think part of the issue is that it was conducted unto iraqi law, and hanging is their way of dealing out capital punishment. Its not nice, and I don't have a say in what was the right way to handle the situation but I certainly wouldn't want to be hanged.

Saddam's brother got hanged a couple of days ago. This one went wrong. He got his head ripped off as he fell with the rope.

Horrible way to go.

Yeah, i read a good article in the Daily Mail ( sorry ) the other day.
It was saying that bravery and even heroism were not confined to good people.
A lot of very bad people, Saddam and Herman Goering, for example showed great courage in the face of death.
Apparently Hitler won a couple of medals in WW1.
So even though he deserved it i agree that it wasnt dealt with very well.
Probably the only brave thing he did in his life.

I suppose some of it would be that you were watching a real person die.
We all watch films where arnie or bruce knock off a dozen bad guys, but we know they are only acting.

Not having a pop at you Messiah, I actually find it quite disturbing that people actually want to watch such things? Having been involved with death, if you like, in my line of work, its the most sickening thing ever.

With regards to his punishment. I think he should have been left to see out the rest of his life behind bars. Hanging is barbaric in my opinion, aren't we supposed to be better than that?

I thought was justice, "hindsight" I made a big mistake

That was the only chance we had left. Let Saddam out of prison, tell him it was one big practical joke and he can do what he likes now he's back in power, and run like hell. Now we're stuck indefinitely in the next Vietnam.

My belief is that no human has the right to take the life of another against their will, so I'm anti-capital-punishment full stop. Ok - Saddam makes me think twice about my whole stance on this, but it would be hypocritical for me to say he deserved to die, so I stand by my view. However, regardless of whether it was correct to kill him, the manner in which it was done was appalling.

I don't think he should have been executed, i think life without parole and put into solitary confinement would have been more fitting.
Its cheaper to keep a killer jailed for 100 years than to execute as the appeals go on and on and cost millions.

Stupid buggers don,t know how to hang people properly, a persons weight and height needs to be used to caualate the drop required to break the neck this is know as a "measured drop". too short drop and the neck is,nt broken and they are slowly strangled to death, too long drop and the head rips off.

Plus using a hemp rope is very unreialble, the western world was hanging people with leather ropes with a big brass eye-let since the late 1800,s breaks the neck far better that a soft knot of hemp. Rolling Eyes

There were no appeals for Saddam, and there aren't going to be any after his death surely? Going on British prices, keeping him locked up for the last 20? years of his life would have cost £1,000,000.

The enemies that we have created through the Iraq 'crisis' think very differently to us, all this 'Don't sink to their level' attitude is not going to get us very far.
After what i've seen extremist people over there do to some of our service men and innocents, it was in many ways a good thing he was dealt with over there with a bit of rope and stool.

Also you have to bear in mind that Suddam wasn't really that bothered.

I agree Messiah. I watched the video because I did not want to miss out on such a seemingly important piece of modern culture. I had read news articles describing people's outrage at the method of execution and wanted to judge it for myself.

I must admit I found myself incredibly upset and disappointed. Saddam was a ruthless, heartless ruler and I know that he inflicted far worse on others; yet the video made me feel completely deflated. His execution felt no better and no more dignified than that of Ken Bigley's, Saddam has been replaced with a ruling government as bad as he was. I just felt that there really was no hope for peace, freedom and democracy.

Of course, Jon took the mick and told me I was hormonal and shouldn't have watched the video anyway due to my intense dislike of 'shooty bangy' films Laughing

without spending hours searching google for the article, I would like to point out that recently US Generals have been saying they actually respected the way Saddam managed to keep a lid on the bubbling violence that has always been ready to ignite since the 1919 Paris Peace conferences when the UK, the USA, France, Italy and Japan.

It was during this period the 5 big nations split Iraq moving the Kurds into one area, the Shi-ites into another and the Sunnis into another.

The secretary to the UK prime minister noted that he honestly expected civil war to break out within four years of the deal happening, because the hatred amongst the different factions was so strong.

When secretarian violence is involved it takes generations to wipe out the hatred between rival factions. Saddam never came close to doing this, but did manage to keep the parties apart. What we have done is install a government who has little control over the country whilst the different factions kill each other and anyone else in the middle.

I don;t think its so much enemies created by us, as enemies who got unleashed by us. As for Saddam's hanging, I disagreed with it but politically I think the USA would have had nothing less than Saddam swinging.

Without the obvious cultural differences I see no difference to what is happening in Iraq as there was in Northern Ireland during the troubles.

They executed the only man capable of holding Iraq together, now it's just a case of how many lives were willing to lose before we pull out and let it descend into the inevitable civil war.

Personally if I were bush I'd be sending more troops into Afghanistan not Iraq.

Yup, irrespective of what he did or who he was, he did the job we put him there for in that he held the country together. In allowing him to be executed we have extinguished any hope of Iraq ever coming through the other side of this in one piece. The civil war that wil now inevitibly happen will kill far more people than Saddam ever would have.

If you remember saddam used chemical weapons on a whole town
filled with mostly women, children and old men, 25,000 people dead
in one go, He was a barbarian through and through and we
can go on about how the americans incited this civil war just so
the powers who now control are alias and will give the US oil etc
but until I saw the video myself I was "the bastard deserves all he
gets" etc, but what i didn't expect was the conflict in feeling it has
produced in ME Shocked Confused seeing it and knowing it was for real and not
just a film on tv, the realism of it has made me rethink, thats I was
not expecting Confused

You should also remember the USA supplied Saddam with the chemical weapons. On another occasion the USA also granted permission for Saddam to use helicopter gunships to mow down Kurds.

And we used chemical weapons on the Iraqis long before Saddam entered power. Winston Churchil was a big advocate of using chemical weapons on Arabs and said

Quote:
"I am strongly in favour of using poisoned gas against uncivilised tribes _ [to] spread a lively terror _" In today's terms, "the Arab" needed to be shocked and awed. A good gassing might well do the job.

https://www.guardian.co.uk/comment/story/0,3604,939608,00.html

That was only 70 year ago, still within my grannies time.

I'm not justifying Saddams reign of terror. Just pointing out the hypocrisy involved since his way was merey more obvious and known about than 'our' way.

Aye, try not to view it through blinkered eyes. Saddam spent most of his rule as a western puppet, carrying out our wishes. He was responsible for stopping the country simply melting down into an all out warzone (as it has now done).

It is easy to forget, and people have short memories.

What is food for thought is that the war that Saddam was captured under (thus being a prisoner of war) was 'illegal' (and has been stated many times as such), so does that mean that his execution was unlawful?
