Trying out my mechanical skills

I'm going to attempt to sevice my calipers on my Thundercat and also fit a new speedo cable. How easy are these jobs? Anything I should know before hand?

It depends what you mean by service. Just pumping the pistons out a bit and cleaning them is easy. Taking the calipers off and taking the pistons out can be a pain in the arse.

Have you have a quote for the seals? 8 front dust seals, 8 front main seals, 2 rear dust seals and 2 rear main seals, 4 caliper half seals. That must be about £80-100 surely?

Depending on how knackered they are you may be able to resuse the main seals.

Remember to pump out the pistons before you remove the brake lines! Do not use any pliers or molegrips for removing them either. Tolerances for them are to hundreths of a millimetre and scoring them with pliers will ruin them for good.

If the pistons are very tight you may need to remove one side first whilst holding the other side back. You will want to do the half that isn't fed first, then split calipers, clamp 1p's over the fluid transfer holes and do the remaining half.

It's not that difficult but will probably take you a while if you haven't done it before.

when i done my calipers i took them to a friendly local garage with compressed air, it took them 10 mins, after i had beed faffing about for an hour still failing Rolling Eyes

Dust seals can often be cleaned and reused. The half seals seal the 2 halfs of the caliper together and really should be renewed.

i have used the original ones, but they are just orings and should be available at any mechanics, halfords might even sell a kit with lots of different orings in it,
