My bike,

Rieju SMX 50 has 2 light switches one on the ignition turn, (i.e. turn again for lights) and one on the handlebar....

I'm trying to sort out an electrical problem right now with the tail light but don't know which light switch is the right one to look at

(I'm hoping this is universal on a lot of bikes, as not many have rieju's)

You may find that the one on the turn of the key is just 'parking lights', my ZXR had those, its a bit old fashioned now.

The one on the right hand switch gear is for side lights and dipped, the left hand switch gear for main beam.

Does the rear light work at all?

Does the brake light work? If so then maybe just cjeck the bulb for a blown filament.

My sidelights work when the key is turned, but the dipped beam and main beam will only work if the engine is running Eh? I thought it was a little strange at first but thats how its supposed to be.

the rear light....
first things first check the bulb, so you can rule that out then check fuses.

i got a rieju mrx125, similar bike different engine
ignition lock functions as follows
all off
ignition on sidelights off
ignition and sidelights on

the handle bar switches turn the main lights on
but can be used in either of the "ignition on" positions

IMO if your taillight is off and your front light works its worth checking the wire going to the back end,
they are very exposed to crud where they run under the back mudguard

mine looks like this
