Just a quick question, it it safe to use on the chain as a means to clean it, not to lube it just clean?

Thanks

Dean

Yep. Been doing it for years - my Triumph's chain is doing fine and has been adjusted twice in 15k miles. I used WD40 to clean it. My VFR750's chain has 30k miles on it when I sold the bike with plenty of life still left in the chain - again cleaned with WD40.

Yes. WD40 is a piss-poor lubricant though so you need to re-grease the chain afterwards.

Some will say that WD40 washes the grease out from behind the o-rings. I don't believe this is true until a chain is suffering heavy wear.

I'll agree. WD40 is great for cleaning chains and other oily/dirty bits. But thats about all its good for. PlusGas is better as a penetrant and oil or grease is betteras a lube.

I think a mate of mine uses it purely as lubricant and he says he's had no problems

May I suggest that if you are going to go to the trouble of getting a can of WD40 to clean your chain then you could instead just get a can of proper chain cleaner. Failing that you can always use paraffin to clean your chain, which is a tried and tested method that won't harm your chain.

Of course youve all got proper standard chain and can put the chain in a nice large pot of oil and gently simmer it.

i use gunk to de-grease/clean my chain. i bought it in the can rather than in an aerosol form, it goes far too quickly in the aerosol form. spray a little onto an old toothbrush and gently clean the chain, the brush gets right into the links and removes all traces of dirt. then use a rag to clean the excess off. then apply a good coat of chain wax.
to be honest i would not use WD40 on the bike at all to de-grease any part of the bike. Gunk is far better.

When I did my CBT the instructor made a point of telling us both to never, ever use WD40 on a chain.

He never said why, he just said it was "lethal!".

He used "lethal!" to describe a lot of things though.

Diesel works brilliantly - only trouble is it makes your clothes stink even after washing.

Could be he was worried that you might spray the tyre, or he could have been referring to using it as a lubricant, rather than a cleaner.

Well I've experiance of using it on a push bike chain. I'd run out of normal lube and in my naivity just bunged on some WD40, I got caught out on the rain and a week or so later my chain was like a solid oval shaped metal bar. It had rusted together so badly I couldn't even turn the cranks.

I managed to rescue it with a hammer and some more WD40 but I won't be using it again as a lube. I also learnt to dry and relube my chain after a spell in the wet (although this isn't as necessary with a good heavy duty lube). As mentioned it is a water displacement (W.D.) tool not a lube. I've also had fairly poor experiance with GT85 as a lube.

Maybe not yet, but he should understand that WD40 is a solvent, not a lubricant, and will actually disolve and wash away any residual lubricant on the chain. If this is not replaced with proper lubricant (not WD40, which dries out fairly quickly and then has zero lubricating proprties) he is likely to halve the service life of his chain.

No no no, no problems at all Vee, the chain's done me pretty well to be honest mate!

By the way, the divvy has recently gone past the 30k mark. I saw it tick over on the clock as it happened and my heart sunk a little Sad quite a depressing sight.

But the back wheel is at maximum adjustment now so I'll be changing the chain and sprockets soon anyway Wink
