Salvaged Bikes from ship

It seems the stricken ship Napoli had some interesting items on board and that they can be salvaged.

Modern day pirates or just lucky.

I wonder if anyone will get to keep them!

I'm pretty sure that the uk salvage laws used to say something along the lines of "finders keepers", but all that seems to have changed:

Even the fairings will be worth a bomb. I imagine the majority will be broken for parts, easier to make them 'dissapear'. I doubt that the V5's and all documents washed up with them

As far as I can gather, if you find any cargo, you should declare it within 28 days. Failure to do so could see you being prosecuted for failure to disclose the find.

It doesn't mention anywhere that you have to give it back, just that you have to report the find. I would immagine you have some sort of claim over the bike, if not, you would surely be entitled to claim some sort of salvage fee?

The majority of the bits were BMW steering wheels for the M3/M5 and automatic gearboxes, already seen 3 wheels on ebay, and one guys selling an autobox, a steering pump or something and some other bits claiming its leftover from a car he sold right minus those essential brand new bits... tempted to arrange a viewing and pass on the addresses, as sticking it straight on ebay is theft IMO. You saw em all on the TV anyway, all pikeys.

I don't think it'd be so bad if it was food, or something cheap, but motorbikes and expensive carspares takes the piss.

Everyone on BBC replies site says its all fair because the ship shouldn't have been so stupid as to crash. But it was storms that caused it to run aground, if you crashed ur car coz a tree fell infront of you, went home and came back the next day to find a bare chassis on bricks you wouldn't say oh well, finders keepers eh.

I understood the ship was holed in bad weather. Due to it becoming more danaged and showing splits on both sides of the hull, it was decided to beach the thing as it was safer than towing to the nearest port.

If it had sank there would be more oil dumped in the ocean and all cargo lost.

BMW dont seem to have much luck bringing vehicles into the UK by sea do they?

They were going to drag it to france, but decided to beach it just off Devon instead.

I watched all this unfolding whilst sitting in south mimms on monday.

There was a bloke well proud of his new beemer. But as people have said, the moment they try and road register them they'll get pwned.

The BBC said they just had to register what they'd taken, and the owners get the option of retrieving the goods.
I guess they'll just end up broken and eBayed.

The law on marine salvage in British waters allows the scavengers to 'rescue' items without penalty, but they have to declare what they have taken so that the real owners can make efforts to reclaim the property. Failure to declare items that they have liberated leaves them liable for serious criminal sanction.
