I need to do something before I lose use of my hands.. They were bright pink and totally numb when I got in this morning, due to the cold.

I am going to HG after work to get some 2 finger pathan gloves, I've heard these commended by many for their warmth.

I called them up, and they only have textile in stock, no leather ones. Has anyone had experience of both and can tell me which gloves are superior in terms of warmth, comfort, and waterproofness?

Cheers.

I have the textile ones and they have been completely waterproof so far and very warm also.

The only reason I went for the textile ones over the leather ones was because they were £5 cheaper and all the rest of my commuting gear is textile.
I only use them for a slowish commute along city streets. If I was going to be using them for high speed riding I'd have gone for the leather and the extra protection they offer in a accident.

I've got the leather ones. I was going to get the textile ones, but they were out of stock in my size. Even the shop assistant suggested getting the textile ones.

The palms on the Pathans are *really* thin. I think it's so they work better with heated grips. When I've come off, I've always landed on the palms. I really wouldn't want to come off wearing Pathans.

Great gloves though, warm and as waterproof as any bit of bike kit.

Ok, I've been reading a lot about the lack of protection on these gloves, and this worries me.

Another issue is the cuff size - I need cuffs that go over my jacket sleeves. My jacket sleeves are VERY tight, so nothing can go under them.

I need some solution as I can't go on like this in this weather... Also, the RXS100 is a 6volt bike, so i can't look at heated grips and so on either..

a voltage doubler? , these things exist on Krill lamps , ie they normally use 1.5v , the brighter ones , are much brighter obviously but suck up 3 volts still using a single AAA battery.

I can make a voltage doubler in under an hour here at work, but thats not what I want to do. The RXS100's 6 volt system already is almost (at best) capable of lighting all the lights one needs, and any extra loading is going to both make the lights inadequate and make it necessary for me to recharge the battery every night.

There MUST be a pair of gloves out there somewhere, capable of keeping my hands reasonably warm, whilst giving some degree of protection, and having cuffs that go outside of my sleeves?

Depends if you intend falling off Wink However, I thing the material they use is the same as that for bike trousers. So I'm thiking they should withstand a bit of a slide even if you need to replace afterwards (new gloves/torusers easier to get than new skin)

Arfdog wrote:

I have a pair of the textiles and they do over my textile jacket cuffs (also HG kit) ok. Never had any problems. No problem recommending them to others either.

When I come to replace I'll look at the leather but as said, can't complain with what I've got.

FWIW the only minor hassle for me is to remember to grip the fingers with your other hand when removing. This stops the inner lining from moving (it's a pain to get back in right). This may be because mine aren't new anymore, but I've got the knack now so not a problem.

HTH Thumbs Up

Try and find a pair of agvsport V paw lobster gloves, their discounted hugely now.
I managed to get some from cissbury leathers on ebay for a tenner a while back. They've got a long cuff with a drawstring toggle to go over sleeves too, if thats your thing...

Their made out of some sort of textile material, and so far are toasty warm and waterproof, and have thick leather covering the palms Thumbs Up

Thanks MAP.

I don't intend taking a tumble, but perhaps you've just jinxed me!

I wander if it's possible to glue addition leather patches in place on the palms if they are really flimsy? Or perhaps thats just downright silly.

Either way, I'm thinkin warmth is King right now for me.. You have the 5 finger pathans too, don't you. I'm guessing Lobster's for the win?

At work so don't have the gloves at hand (pun). From what I remember they do have some grip material on the palms. However, this is quite soft (suede like Confused). They're not flimsy but obviously flex so you can grip. Don't think it'd be practical to mess with it.

I did pick up the 5 finger version at a bike jumble. Even more hassles with the lining in those (that's why I got them cheap Very Happy). In practice they're just thick gloves. Still warm but I find the 2 finger ones warmer (as in I'm not thinking how cold my hands are feeling). That's a good thing Thumbs Up

Actually I bought the SMALL gloves for the same price.. I simply linked to ones i didn't buy, so no-one can look up my ebay username, look at my feedback, and then put up ludicrous posts making ridiculous allegations about me buying or selling kinky toys or erotic underwear.

Ive been using a pair of Pathans for a few years now, I guess mine are classed as the textile ones, but they have the suede style palm. They are the two fingered zoidbergs.

Very warm and waterproof up to the point where they simply absorb the water right through them. This only happened the once on a three hour ride in a complete downpour that was comparable to simply submerging them in a bucket!!

In response to the crash worries, I had the same concerns myself until I went bouncing down the road after a 60mph highside last feb. They were a tiny bit scuffed but my hands were fine.

Been there, done that, on a slippery roundabout at 35 mph or so. They (the leather ones) coped no bother at all, just an insignificant scuff on the gauntlet part.

I've also bounced a few times in Pathans. No problems. Despatched through three winters in mine, with a set of handle bar muffs, cold and wet were never a worry.
