I worked above a guitar shop on-and-off for about three years, so I know it's customary for guitar shoppers to get amped up and break in a badly mangled version of Sweet Child of Mine, but now I'm actually looking to buy a new guitar for myself and wondered if anybody had any personal favourites or party pieces they saved for those sort of situations?

I'm looking at getting a half-decent steel-strung acoustic after having barely picked up an acoustic in my life, so if anybody's got some simple acoustic licks that would work ok with a pick or two fingers, then that would be a bonus.

For what it's worth, my favourite party piece on the electric always used to be Megadeth's Tornado of Souls, although after an almost ten-year hiatus, maybe it's time I found a new and slightly less embarrassing one?

Not quite the same, but I seem to have developed a routine for warming up or having a quick blast on someone elses instrument.
First of all I hammer out the first few phrases from Bruch's Violin Concerto to check out the evenness of tone and power across the strings and positions (long upwards sweeping phrases).
Nail out some Bach patterns which checks the response speed of the instrument and finally a bit of Czardas for pure showing off Very Happy

It has to be the intro to Back In The Village by Iron Maiden, Followed by the intro to Hot For Teacher by Van Halen.

Current music doesn't really cut it when it comes to guitar shop demos! Wink

When my sister did her work experience in a guitar shop a few years back the favourite was Wonderwall by oasis, but I suspect that has changed too.

Fear of the Dark, Iron Maiden, nice acoustic first verse, try that, its fingerpicking, then theres the heavier parts of the song, sounds awesome too.

I tend to just let myself go and improv some solo's nowadays.

Any Pete Townsend, you have know that you get the right sound as the guitar disintegrates from being bashed on the floor and into the amps.

On a similar note (hhahaa, do you see what I did there? *clutches sides*) you could always try imitating Steve Vai and just test how long the good guitar sound lasts after having set fire to it....

For trying out acoustics or clean sounds, the standard in my day was always Randy Rhoads 'Dee' from Blizzard of Oz. For nasty riffage the end section of Sabbath Bloody Sabbath was always 'de rigeur'. Cool

My local guitar shop had a sign banning "Stairway to Heaven". Laughing

Did you know that record shops have to pay a fee to the people who collect artists' royalties each year to cover people testing guitars in the shop and playing copyrighted songs. Surprised
