wet gear? No, not quite...:(

Right. Dropped the ZZR off for it's new bodywork this morning (all done ) but got to work and wondered why my gear smelled wet as I haven't been out in the rain recently and the gear has been sat on the floor under the stairs out of the way.

Just getting my gear on to pick up the bike and I think I've found the issue with it.

It's not rain....




It's cat Piss. .



I guess it's a dry cleaning job and a bucket of Febreeze then, then work out which of my cats is the culprit and move all my gear elsewhere...

Bloody animals..

A similar thing happened to a friend of mine.. The cat pissed ON his diving wetsuit, which in a waterproof diving bag (left open, obviously). He didn't notice the smell when he zipped the bag up and chucked it in his car boot..

He did notice the smell when he next unzipped the bag though - about a week later, after car had been driven around extensively under the hot african sun!

I'm guessing it's not your leathers, and most fabric stuff can be put in the washing machine - use pure soap and don't put any fabric conditioner in (it wrecks the waterproof membrane). If you've not cleaned your washing machine for a while, do a boiling wash in it with just detergent and the machine empty to get rid of any old detergent and fabric softner.

Nikwax do good quality, easy to use stuff - and it'll be cheaper than taking it to a dry cleaner (if fabric kit can be dry cleaned - I've never checked...).

Is it Leather?

My beloved kitten had *issues* when she was younger... I ended up leaving the jacket out on the balcony for a couple of weeks letting it get rained on and then dry out a few times.

Tis right as rain now several years on, apart from some interesting colouration...

Well, the stuff had dried so I didn't really notice (got a bad cold at the moment as well) until I'd been wearing it for a little while.

As soon as a sponged the gear down, christ! it stank then! Probably then the male cat, dirty rotten stop out that he is, probably a dirty protest at being locked in..

Anyway, checked the labels:

Don't dry clean
Don't machine wash
Don't Hand wash

Just.. Don't...

Chucked it in the washing machine on a cool wash (sports shoes setting) and seemed to be ok. The inner lining is fine but after a night of drying the outer layer still smells.

Coated it in Febreeze and as soon as that's dry I'll turn them inside out and re-spray again.

I've a spray bottle of Nikwax tent and gear proofing which is great for waterproofing my gear. Only downside is that the first time I used it, got on the bike and then hit the brakes, the seriously slippy coating sent me sliding up onto the tank.

That's why I always hae a bit of cargo matting on the seat and it's great for pillions so you can brake without them sliding into you.

I'll chuck 'em through the wash again on a higher temp setting if needs be.
