First geared machine at last

Just picked up my '99 Yam SR125 today, the first geared machine I have had the chance to ride since step through pit bikes when I was a nipper, teaching myself to ride today and I'm 100% fookin loving it.

Compared to my old scooter (stolen 2 days ago, recovered, fubar)
it seems like lightning!.

Just two quick questions, it clicks from the engine or crankcase the moment the piston stops when I kill it, is this normal or am I looking at some work? (The oil level is fine)

And also, I have never had to maintain a chain before, can anyone tell me how often to clean/lube to ensure it stays in top condition.

oil the chain every week, or after a long ride,
i wouldnt worry about the noise, it could be the gears clunking about or a sticky valve,
i would as its a new to you bike get a new spark plug oil and filter and change them, then you know its done,
get some engine flush as well and run that through the engine first before you do the oil (dont ride with it in the engine just start and leave for 15 mins)
that'll get ride of all the gunk and crap out of your engine.

i think your sr (+ xt and ybr yams) is the same engine as fitted to my reiju (mrx125)
mine makes a click sound when the engine stops too
if it makes that noise while running that's when i'll worry

i go offroading so my chain gets some serious pain but
i oil my chain twice a week or when it looks dry
and i find the spray-can oil to be poor, short-lived and ineffective
the scottoil in a small bottle is good

cheers fellas, I will give it the cleaning you described tomorrow, upon starting I have to let the starter run with the engine for a couple of seconds after it fires as the throttle kills it and it dies otherwise, the bike is on 13k and I suspect a new spark plug and a clean air filter will help me quite a bit, the choke sometimes works but as it is very cold at the moment I'm not calling this standard running.

Remember to use the choke as well.

Pull it out fully, press starter with a little throttle, once started release throttle, engine will rev up because of the extra fuel and air delivered via the choke. Slide the choke towards off until revs start to die down. If the bike stalls during this process pull it out a touch more (about 2mm). And restart the bike via starter switch, but no throttle.

Once the engine is warm turn the choke fully off and you wont foul the sparkers.

2nd day of the DAS on the SR and it was a little sod to start, after many a cranking and stalling at the centre off we went down the road and into town.

I promptly stalled at a mini round about and could nt start as I had previously flattened the battery

The 3 other DAS wanabees then had to bump start me

Apart from that it was a nice little 'pogo stick' of a bike

Looks a little dated, but so does the CG, seems bullet proof (well it must be if used by learners ) and will easily do NSL speeds as long as you aint a big fatty.

my engine starts just the same
it wont rev till chokes off
but if you take choke off too soon it dies
they're very fussy
does your carb have any adjustment on it?
mine doesn't have an idle screw or a mixture screw ('04 tho')
