Bit of a weird one this - Would you buy this product?!

Howdy,

I work for a large(ish) electronics retailer here in good old blighty. Recently one of our product managers came to me with a new product she was looking at and being the only biker here thought I could give her some advice.

It's basically a D Lock with an incorporated 100db Alarm. It comes with a little keyfob that gets paged if you're within a mile radius when the alarm is set off. I've attached some pictures for reference.

I personally don't think it would sell very well, particularly since it hasn't been submitted to Thatcham or Sold Secure. She's looking at pitching it at between £60-£100 which I think, quite frankly is a touch steep. But alas she wanted more opinions so I told her I'd ask about....

...So? Would you buy it, is the price too high, does the lack of thatcham approval put you off? What would make you consider it?

I've a good idea of the response I'll get but she insisted I ask about

I think its abit too expensive also looks quite heavy to carry around. I like the idea of the pager thing though

I would for the paging bit, depending on what sets it off, and if it's a true 1 mile radius, or if that's 'perfect, clean room' radius.

Not a bad idea if your garage is seperate to your house, put it on the inside of the garage door and you get a garage alarm and pager in one. Would be more effective than putting it on the bike

If I didn't have an integral garage, I'd be interested.

I was given something like that to test by my mates dad, it didnt have a paging unit on it, the lock was good felt solid, but it was very heavy and the alarm would go off if the wind blew at it to hard, so it was more annoying than anything. Not sure I'd pay for one,

Not for me no. It doesn't look like it offers enough security and I wouldn't trust the alarm part of it not to get killed by the weather or just eat batteries.

Personally I'd rather pay more money for an integrated system for the bike, or a more secure lock and chain.

If they were say....£35, I would buy one. Use it at home (at night) and on quick visits to the shops where I know I wont be too far away from the bike.

I would expect the range to be perhaps 200-300 metres on a good day, quite reliable up to 150-200metres.

For me, the strength of the lock is quite unimportant. As long as its as good as a cheap padlock and some effort is required to remove it, activating the pager as a result, I'd be happy with that.

Why when i look at that why do i expect to see 'made in china' on the bottom. To be honest it looks cheap and i can kind of see why its not been through thatcham approval.

The idea of having it in a garage is good as my garage is behind my house and for that if it was reliable i would probably buy it. But other than that it doesnt look very durable and i wouldnt trust it to secure my bike.

I think I feel like a lot of people feel which is that if a product has crap packaging I will distrust the product from the word go!

Listing features on the front of the box and using those crap stars make it look like a piece of shit.

Design an elegant box and you will probably make more sales, sad I know but true (IMO).

I think if they were up to £40 I'd get one, just for the pager facility. My bike is garaged, but the garage is in a separate block to the house. Wind/rain wouldn't be a problem for it, as I wouldn't take it out with me. Would need to know how long the batteries are good for though, as if I don't ride my bike for a couple of weeks I don't want to be forking out for a new set all the time. I would hope the drain would be along the lines of a smoke detector, so maybe a 9V would last 6 months or so.

when buying a lock i look for some kind of test result. Although thatcham and sold secure is not the be all and end all it shows some strength. how could i be sure yours isnt made from hardened cheese?
I wouldnt buy it as its too expensive, looks cheap and unproven security.

I would want it to be a disc lock and not a D-lock, so I could carry it underneath my seat.

I would want it to be as good as the thatcham approved disc lock I currently have which fits flush to the disc so is difficult to cut off.

I would want it to be thatcham approved.

If it did all of the above, then I would consider £60 for it. Though to be honest, the pager bit is only useful if you are close enough to your bike to get there before it has been taken. If you're a mile away, you'll arrive to see the white van/pikey kid disappearing on the horizon.

The Xena disc locks have an alarm built in, but from what I've seen it's not particularly reliable and doesn't always go off when it should - I'd be very cautious of this product for a similar reason.

Probably not, partially due to cost and partialy due to design. I like the pager bit though.

I tend to use a disc lock for quick stops out and about as it is small enough to put in my pocket. Not briliant but enough to stop some chav thinking they could just ride it away.
At home a bloody great chain and padlock connected to a ground anchor.

There are two types of theft. Opportunist joy riders who may take an unlocked bike, and professional breakers / exporters, who in variably use vans or pick ups. They are the ones to watch in which case unless it is bolted down, they tend to find a way to get the bike away quickly.

Handy yes but for it to work only when Im in that range would not justify the money over a standard lock.
I know thats probably a reasonable range for paging but again I dont tend to lock the bike when im that close.

So Id only look at it if it could help me outside that sort of radius when I can be arsed to use a lock .

The design and packaging, especially the logo on the lock itself, looks cheap and tacky, so I wouldn't buy one for just that reason.

Also, at £60-£100, people are going to either want the Thatcham etc, or they'll just pay a bit more and get a Datatool alarm, as it's an immobilsor too.

£60 buys you an oxford alarmed disc lock which is very meaty and aparently 5 minute atack tested, so no I wouldn't buy that cheap crap at that price.

I know I'm re-itterating what others have already said, but It does seem tempting for me, my garage is at the end of my street
I wouldn't take it anywhere though would use it to secure the garage then maybe I'd get there before the tea leaves got to touch my bike
