Is this a stupid thing to do? it's at a dealers.

It's got, on the plus side,

33bhp restriction with certification (FI I assume)
FSH
No scratches etc.
13000 genuine miles
Apparently a very sweet runner (the salesman would say that !)

on the negative: parkers says an independent dealer should be charging more like £900 and privately they should be £600-£800 but I imagine they're generally expecting it to have huge mileage.

Any thoughts on this one?

Doug hacking is selling GPZs '98s and 99s models for £1495 , the only real benefit is a service + 12 M MOT on it , + 3 months warranty,

though they are in v good condition ,

write down the faults before hand , get it serviced by them and check them , and ASK for the old parts to make sure they have done it , checking oil colour before hand putting an X on the filters helps your cause! , they can't fake it and think you are a rube,

I always ride the NTV to go see a bike , makes people think I am a dispatcher (I have my car back) and thus like Sickpup very knowledgable with bikes when I am fairly proficient but no Sickpup.

seems pricy to me due to the age Confused

Granted low mileage, but would expect that to be sold as a hack simply due to the age

Way too much. You can get a mint 2000- for that if you buy privately.

It's not a complicated or troublesome bike so i see no advantage in buying from a dealer.

I sold my GPZ for £750 3 months back, it was an M reg with 22000 miles on it. So that is one hell of a premium you would be paying Exclamation
I personally wouldn't bother looking at dealers for bikes that age.

You can get a good condition Bandit for that price!!! The GPZ is an L reg which is like 1993/1994. That's really old for the price. I wouldn't buy it for that price, would have to be sub £1000 to be honest.

I would have to disagree with what most of the others are saying.

Age and, to a certain extent, mileage are fairly irrelevant to me. I would be first wanting to know is this a dealer I know and trust or have I just walked in off the street? I would then be looking at the overall condition, listening to it running, if possible giving it a test and certainly letting my very mechanically competent other half give it a proper going-over before deciding.

If he says it's OK and the condition is good I would then be looking to negotiate with the dealer depending on stuff like does it have any tax/mot, is he prepared to give a warranty, service or fluid change prior to collection etc and just on general principle. At this time of year I would expect you to get that down to at least £1100, possibly £1000. If you're really good, maybe even less.

I paid in that region for my very-good-condition K-reg 400 Zephyr just before Xmas, with 21000kms, 10 months tax and MOT, service including oil and filter change, barely scrubbed in tyres and 3-month parts and labour warranty. I reckon it was worth every penny............. Smile

But I'm in sheffield and it seems nobody is selling any bikes privately near me whatsoever.

I check daily on biketrader and bikehq and theres rarely anything within 40-100 miles of sheff.

This is so frustrating!

I'm guessing that you have no part ex, which will work in your favour.

You should be able to get that down to £1000 with a service and MOT, warranty, although handy, is in some ways irrelevant as your statuatory rights give you some protection anyway.

Check that the tyres and chain/sprockets are OK and have plenty of life in them.

With parkers price, bear in mind that it is based on average mileage, which will be somewhere around 40k on this bike.

Having a quick look on biketrader they do seem to be nearly all trader adverts asking way over the odds which is unusual (the all being trade, not the asking too much bit). There's not even many on ebay which is even more unusual.

I guess private sellers are hanging onto them untill the weather pick up.

I'd hold on if i were you. There are much better deals to be had.

93 L is the old style shape. I wouldn't pay any more than £800 for one of those regardless of condition.

As above, for that price you can buy a year 2000 ish bike.

And why restrict yourself to just within 40 miles. Is there any reason why you aren't prepared to travel further?

Because any bikes I go to see are I'm going to be getting lifts off friends/family.

The selection of 500s on there are shocking

theres a YZF600R that looks tasty, 58 miles away, for 1900, but my insurance premium will be big.

Don't count your chickens, it was £440 TPFT for me at 18 1yr NCB. For some reason, only on the Thundercat, TPFT costs half as much as TPO.

Actually that is very expensive for an L Reg GPZ.

One thing does it have a drum at the rear or a disc?

I paid £1300 for a very good condition M Reg GPZ500S in 2004, that was expensive then and I was a fool, but mine only had 7,000 miles on it. I did find out a few months later why it had such a low mileage though!

Like has been said you can get a far newer bike for that much and there are far better bikes out there for that much anyway, look at 600's instead of a 500, the insurance differences are miniscule.

Far far too much.

A quick look on ebay brought up a nice condition GPZ in blue, a year 2000 bike, for £1100. A grand offer in cash would probably get it.

I just spent 4 grand on a W-reg 1.9l Seat Toledo when my W-reg Renault et it's engine. I could've got a cheaper and younger car somewhere else but this thing had a full dealer Service history and only 18k miles on the clock, 9k less than the renault when I bought it 4 years ago.

Similar aged cars are alot cheaper but the milage and the FSH was worth the extra cash.

go on then. tell me what I should do.

I live in a shitty area with no garage, I'm 17 (nearly 18) no years NCB

Gonna be restricting whatever I get and need a bike soon!
Want something that'll take me round the country - faired and cheap to run.

was considering a thundercat but taking it from 100bhp to 33bhp would gut it.

Have a look on adtrader uk for a bike you can sort them by distance so you can rule out those that are to far away, another option you might consider is an older bike such as a gpz 400, you can then try getting classic bike insurance. Another option regarding insurance, although i should say it, is to register the bike at someone elses house Wink , family member or good friend, who live in an area that is cheaper to insure, just double check your policy first as some double the excess or won't pay out if the bike gets stolen between certain hours away from where you declare it as being kept.

I paid £1200 for my Bandit 600 its a T reg (1999) it had 3.5k miles on it which is very low for the age but was owned by a women who never used it (just stored in garage). It had 12 months MOT on it as well.
That was last year as well, just had my first MOT on it and it passed everything.
This was a private buy
