Introduction of weaker lagers.

Interesting story here about the way that many breweries are beginning to bring out weaker strength lagers to enable more "pub time" to suit the British culture of fast drinking.

Personally myself, I can't see myself drinking Carling C2, unless I am driving, in which case I suppose it would almost enable me to have 2 pints, seeing as it is only 2% ABV, however in recent months my taste buds have been more drawn to the premium lagers much more like Stella Artois and Heineken for example. I find that they don't taste like urine unlike Carling and Fosters which I binged on quite a lot during freshers. Another plus side being that even though Premium Lagers are more expensive per pint, they are a fair bit stronger and I get pissed on less pints of Stella than I do Carling. Therefore my stomach doesn't get put under so much pressure and neither does my wallet.

For those people who don't drink to get drunk I think it's a good idea, though I suspect it will taste horrific and be disgustingly fizzy.

There have always been weaker beers available, on Saturday night I was drinking some lovely Black Sheep that is only 3.8%. Let's ban all this lager nonsense and bring some decent beer back into the bars \o/

Tescos have been making "Value" lager around the 2% mark for years - and I bet it's less than half the price that this C2 will be. And nicer.

Dont drink any weak lager at all. And if im driving/Riding, ill just have a Pint of Dark Mild which is only 3.2% ABV

Mostly drink, Carlsberg or Stella when im out in Town, or when im down the local Holt's Diamond lager which comes in at 5.5% abv - 9% abv, its lethal stuff.

The only time I would drink it is if I was out for a pint at lunch time. For this I think it is an excellent idea.

Usually if I have have a pint of stella then I would be ready for a sleep around 3pm, fosters is not too bad and shandy tastes like crap if you're not in the mood for it

British lagers are horribily tasteless as it is, I can't imagine making weaker versions will help rectify this situation. Carling is the perfect example of this - Bland tasteless water. Think it says somewhere on the Camra website that lagerbeer needs to be at least 5%abv to have a properly developed taste.

If they could make a 2% lager with a good flavour I'd probably drink it under certain circumstances, but I find that situation unlikely. Personally I don't see what all the fuss is about "drinking to get drunk". I like feeling drunk, it allows me to forget about all the little hassles in life for a short while. What's so bad about this?

Damn, I remember when Heineken was 3.2% and I think was only actually sold in the UK. The stronger stuff they serve now was originally sold as Heineken Export here (or as plain Heineken on the continent) and was/is a much nicer pint than Stella or Kronenbourg.

I'd still rather have a nice pint of "Son of a Bitch" though....

pfffft! persoanlly i dont think it will be paticularly popular, if your driving/ going to the pub at lunch or such like as people have mentioned then i imagine it would be just the same to drink non alcoholic larger. Aside from that i prefer my beer/ dark bitter

makes sense to me. Youngsters can start on 2%, then be restricted to 3.5% for two years after they've passed their test and be allowed to drink whatever the hell they want at the end of the two-year restriction period. If they turn 21 during the restriction period, then they can do an accelerated access test to start drinking proper beer before the restriction ends.

The test itself would probably involve walking a straight line, not thinking that busted and mcfly were ever any good, being able to distinguish between a fitty and jade goodie at thirty paces and not glassing the instructor after he casts aspersions on your choice of football team.

It could lead to some grey areas where people on a restricted drinking license would order shandys made with normal-strength beer so that bar staff have to go round randomly sticking hydrometers in people's drinks to see whether the alcohol level is legal or not, but I reckon the idea could be a goer.

Fosters is even worse than Carling in my opinion. I wake up with the mother of hangovers if I drink that cheap stuff. With Stella I get very drunk, so drunk the world is actually spinning however in the morning I feel absolutely fine.

Get back to Fosters and I need to drink a fair amount to actually get drunk and feel rather more ill than drunk and then wake up with a mother of a hangover!
