The death sentence?

So why the hell did this country ged rid of it? Our prisons are overcrowded everywhere and our tax money goes to waste looking after rapists and murderers until they die in prison. Why should people with no respect for human rights laws be given human rights, surely once they cross that line their human rights should be void?. It makes me angry to watch our country slowly grind itself into the ground because its run by people that have no real idea what they are doing. Can't deal with drug addicts repeat offending for petty crime to feed their habit so we put them in in a cell on with other addicts and access to a plentiful supply of smack (and free food and shelter). And then we send pensioners to prison for not paying their huge council tax bills.

There is absolutely no way this country could cope with the death sentence.

We gave the police a tiny ounce of power after the 7th July bombings, "yes if he's a terrorist shoot him" and what happened? The only guy we shot was completely innocent.

The sheer number of innocent people that would die is enough not to introduce it.

Probebly because that would make us as bad as them.
the problem needs sorting all the eway through not just the juditional system, saying life and getting 5 months and so on.
The probelm also lays with society breading the crime.
Social class could be one thing, failure to do anything about ones life and choosing other people to do that for you including pay your way (dole wallers) could be another,
I dont think there is an ultimate solution and the death sentance although tempting at times is in my oppinion wrong.
theres a big difference between capitol and corpral punnishment.

Stocks for your basic asbo loving numpties. (a bit of public humiliation allong with rotten tomatoes is bound to be funny and effective. (also a possiblility of a funn celebrity tv show, Pelt the hasbeen)

the gibbot for bike and car crime and so on, not the noose and not to the death just enough to make em think twice.

Yeah fair enough, but that was back in the day where little proof was needed for such a harsh sentence. Surely in extreme circumstance where the prisoner is in no way ever going to be even considered for release because their to much of a danger, then why must we pay for them live out the rest of their days in prison?.

I can certainly agree with that. Thumbs Up

It's probably fair to say also, that with more modern forensic evidence techniques (DNA and suchlike), it's more likely you'd have caught, and convicted, the right man/woman.

Maybe dump a massive pile of unwanted unused land/rocks debris etc and dump it in the Atlantic, flatten the top, an build a mahoosive prison on top for the more serious crimes.
with uber evil defences*thinks about - electric fence/sharks/tranquilisers*

Then have the odd ship taking/bringing prisoners/guards to and fro.

Sorted.
Thumbs Up

I think one of the reasons why the death penalty shouldn’t come back, is the bissies will do almost anything to get a conviction (crime statistics and all), however there is dna now a days, which is pretty much fool proof, so there is another argument for it

As for the over crowding of prisons go, well what options do you have only one, more prisons, but fairly unpractical (due to cost) unless it was funded in part by the government, and say every £1.00 in £5.00 of profit from the national lottery went to also subsidise it, just an idea

But the real way to cure overcrowding is to stop the problem before it becomes a problem,

Sorry to say this, although I was not alive at the time, but national service would be a good the answer, proper discipline for the modern day youth, let’s face it they have it a darnce site easier nowadays, and my honest opinion is that they have to many rights, you cant even shot someone that tries to robs you of you own property on your own land

I know there are a lot of young people on here, and this is not aimed at the hard working youth of today, but the takers and not the givers

Please don’t use drugs as an excuse; there is plenty of help out there for them too

Ok, serious head on here.

Imagine one of you advocates of the death penalty meet a nice girl at a club. You get lucky, say your goodbyes the following morning.

Next thing, coppers are at your door, you're in a paper suit, charged with rape.

Imagine if, despite your innocence, you were convicted of rape.

You become the scum that people like yourself want to send to the chair or into some rat-infested prison hole with zero rights. Cause you're a sick rapist bastard, aren't you?

Another scenario, a vague acquaintence turns violent one day, tries to snap your head off. You manage to push him away, but he falls oddly and breaks his neck.

As bad luck would have it, there is some history (he owes you money, or something). You are stitched up, you have no witnesses to back your story, he has no previous violent behaviour.

You are sent down, you are murdering scum and deserve the chair or to be dumped on a prison island.

Just a couple of scenarios for you to think about. All the forensic evidence in the world can't prevent miscarriages of justice.

That's why I will never favour a death penalty.

True, hence the thought of prison on the sea. at least it's not death.(which in my view is the easy way out)[/quote]

Yeah but that kind of thing is down to the jury to consider:
does the suspect have previous criminal record of this sort of behaviour, rape, violence, etc.

That my friend, is a whole new kettle of fish.
Prisons should be built on a desolate island actually, and heavily guarded. Thumbs Up

You do know what jurys are made up of? People, just ordinary people!!! Not infallible beings!

The criminal justice system in this country IS in a right state, centuries of neglect, apathy and short-sighted solutions.

However, half-arsed, ill-thought out ideas are unlikely to solve it. It needs a proper overhaul. Unfortunately, I can't see this government doing it.
