Riding with dangerous relatives?

Well a certain "relative" (whose name shall not be mentioned) has just gone and brought an import cbr600 k reg i think in a right state for 1 grand. and he didnt even go and see it before he brought it just rang up and paid.

Now car driving he is incredibly dangerous and always stoned so shouldnt drive but hes now got the bike, the last thing you ever want him to have.

Some of the stuff hes come out with is just classic, however he is constantly coming out with the "the bloke i work with races R1's and their rapid as fu*k" he also thinks his bike will do 0-2800mph in 2.3 seconds and that he has so much riding experience (from racing around a moped on a field when he was a kid) that he can do two lessons and pass his test, then keep his bike for 2 months moving straight two a gixxer 750.

Am i right to be ashamed that soon he will be related to me, he keeps asking me to sort out rides for when hes done his test but to be honest hes so dangerous in a car i wouldnt want him anywhere near me when on a bike. I have to keep making up excuses or just putting things of and when hes done his test its gunna be that much harder to get out of riding with him without telling him. He wants a go of my bike as well but i know he would have no respect for my bike and ride like a complete prat. He almost ran me over when i was younger in the car.

There much i can do? should i go for a ride, bite the bullet and see how bad it is then just leave it at that or should i tell him straight up or lie and keep putting it of.

Thing that makes it difficult is theres a lot of talking about me between all the family and if i organise rides with mates, bike show trips etc he will inevitably (spelling?) find out

I'd tell him about it , ensure everybody knows what you think and go riding with another group.

Thing is when he comes round our house for a visit, like christmas etc hes not stoned and fairly sensible so he would probably be allright to ride with in that state (cant guarantee it though as not sure what he drives like normally), but the majority of the time he is.

I wouldn't worry. He sounds like the sort who would fail a couple of tests then lose interest anyway.

It sounds like he isn't the sharpest tool in the shed this chap.

You can handle the situation diplomatically but you have to assert yourself on certain points.

Firstly, if he hasn't passed his test then he shouldn't be on the road. You need to tell him you're simply not happy about riding with him until he's passed ('for your families sake/you'd feel responsible' etc etc).
Hopefully by going through the process of lessons, meeting others and trying to pass his test he will gain some awareness of the seriousness of riding a bike on the road. Remember he has to pass his test first and if he does then technically he can ride a bike.

Secondly - 'stoned' on what?
If he plans on smoking weed and then going out for a blast on his bike then I would put a lot of money on him having a very nasty experience very quickly.
I am guilty of having the odd smoke and driving home locally sometimes but when it comes to riding a bike it's a different kettle of fish entirely. You shouldn't have any fear of telling him that these things just don't mix, and if he doesn't respect that from you then you don't want to know him.

You're going to be the one standing there having to explain to the relatives how he died after deciding to get a bike, like you. Are you going to tell them he was stoned?
Seriously for the risk of a bit of bad feeling and awkwardness I would let the lad know where he stands as soon as possible.

i do agree with alot you say akadave only some things are awkward. firstly the stoned thing is everyone knows he smokes dope you can see it and its been the point of discussion for a long time. However he likes to deny it so im gunna have to be pretty clever about how im going to approach that one. maybe say it in such a manner thats not directed at him, if possible.

Thing is if i do create awkwardness over this and he takes offence or ends up hating me (which im not really botherd about) for it its going to make alot of the family uncomftable and possibly cause arguments. Its something i will have to be really carefull about bringing up if i do end up going for a ride.

You've got nothing to lose if he doesn't speak to you either from what I can gather...

!) next time this crops up, say 'Listen, I'm not being funny, but I don't want to be around someone who rides like you cos I don't wanna witness a person(or bike) splatted in the road because of a stupid manouvre/risk', explain with 1 or 2 examples, if he is remotely bothered, he will consider this and hopefully calm down.

2) the above, but say it as if your talking about someone else, and see if he agrees, at least you will both know where you stand in the situation, then voice your concerns to you family, be blunt, to the piont, and refuse to ride with him if need be because of the implications.

P.S., I realize a lot of that will be hard/tricky, but it's better than trying to explain to everyone what went wrong, why and know everyone kind of holds you accountable(and you'll feel really shit)

definitely dont lead and leave him behind, as he will come off trying to keep up.

Instead ride at a safe distance behind him, so that when he comes off, you wont get caught up in the accident.

Tell him to straighten up. I would have told him by now in the car, a couple of mates drive like wankers, they think its cool but it's not. It could seriously kill someone.

Frankly tossers like this shouldn't be driving/riding at all. AT least on a bike they will probably only hurt/kill themselves and then they won't be a danger to anyone.

If he is going to ride like that much of a nutter, he's probably better off stoned.

Mind you, for all the bragging he's doing about how fast it is, I bet he has no idea what that sort of acceleration is like. Nothing like a healthy dose of shitting yourself the first time it shakes its head under acceleration to calm you down a bit.

I took a friends 17 year old brother out on the back of my GPZ500 after him mouthing off about how fast he'd go on a bike, how fast he drives his car and suchlike.

I told him to hold on tight because we were going up to a ton and back. Got it rolling, made sure he was balanced then gave it beans. He was screaming like a little girl by the time I'd hooked third gear. Laughing

Some excellent advise from all and its helped alot, ive decided to be blunt as alot of people know i can be so it may be expected and tolerated a bit more.

If he insists on going for a ride im gunna tell him that if he rides like a prat, is stoned or does anything stupid im going to trun around and bugger of home because i dont want to be responsable for what could happen.

I thought maybe i could ride like a bigger prat to show how stupid it is but then id probably end up in alot of pain, probably not a good idea Rolling Eyes
