Had the bike for 2 months now and getting used to its little quirks and the comical way it handles sometimes however, the grip at the rear is often questionable.

Many a time the rear skids and steps out when leaning over, mainly half round a round about. Not the best time to have to stand up and straighten as I then start to get target fixation with the curb Shocked Rolling Eyes

The little rubber tyres are quite knobbly and never, ever seem to warm up. I was wondering if this was half the problem, the other being the actual amount of grip attainable from a knobbly tyre on tarmac.

People who ride off roaders on the road, do you find grip questionable on the road?

As they dont tend to make 3.5 x 8 BT020 or Pilots I am in a little bit of a dilemma. Do I stick with the compromised cheap rubber or up grade to a more road focused tyre.

Well the answers simple, up grade Wink

Going from one extreme to the other, I have seen some 'road slicks' that may help the traction, but from what I understand, when 'slicks' are cold they are quite hand full?

Do what Burt Munro did and cut the knobblies off with a carving knife. Good old kiwi ingenuity!

Knobblies do not make good road tyres and I would suspect yours aren't to great quality anyway.

Girlfriend had a monkeybike. It had knobblies and they weren't that bad. Not particularly brilliant either though.

Why not get these?

linky fixy

Id say its only a problem with careless braking.

I recently got a 4 stroke 250 that has road legal off road tyres, and last night, I absent mindedly let my speed creep up to about 50-60 on a downhill approach to a roundabout.

On my sports 600, or 250 commuter scooter, I would have stopped quite comfortably.

However the road may have been a bit cold and damp, but mostly what happened next is due to the front tyre.

There is a slight bend on the approach to the roundabout, and i lost the front wheel under braking 3 times, recovered 3 times, and still overshot the approach a bit when a car was going round the roundabout.

My foot went down a few times, and i released the front brake each time it slid, and then reapplied, but I was quite lucky, and will be much more careful in future.

I should get a more road biased front tyre, but the back is ok really.

The good thing about small dirt bikes, is its lot easier to recover than on less agile heavier bikes.

I think its down to the much smaller contact patch with the road, and the hardness of the rubber.

They also do Dunlop as well, but what I was trying to state is that you cant just go into a tyre place and get the latest rubber of the shelf, or ask peoples comments on whats the best as there is nothing to compare them to.

So should you buy the best known 'brand' or look at the tread pattern, the tyre componds? The ones that caught my eye were the road slicks as the looked the closest to proper bike tyres and of course they are on special at a pair not singles Wink

When doing scooter racing, other people were recommended 'Sama Sporty' and seemed to do them fine with not much wear over the three hour race.

Couldn't get them in the sizes we needed for our DNA, we ended up with Continental Twist Sports or something; also did ok.

I believe that the tyres dont even have a maufacturer listed on them Laughing so, yes, not the highest of quality.

Nice (if thats the correct word) to hear that as a genre, knobblies suck at road tyres (not just me riding like a nonce)

My knobblies on the DR get hot, infact very hot sometimes. That may have something to do with the fact I tend to ride it quite quickly. Spent the journey to college rammed up the backend of a 'blade that would piss off down the straights then pussy foot around the corners. Eventually I got narked off and overtook him on a nice visible left hander Laughing I think it scared the shit out of him.

FYI I use continental Twin Duros, I cannot recommend them enough, good dry and wet grip, and still manage a bit of mudding every now and then.
