Yeah, ok, old thread resurrected. I know it's been covered before, but maybe this might help people avoid possible future grief.

To recap, the scenario as has been widely reported - you move house/send in your licence to remove or add points etc, and your licence comes back from our friends Rolling Eyes at the DVLA without your favourite category. You have to go through a lot of hassle to get it back, including retaking your test in some cases.

One solution which has been successfully used, is to write now to the DVLA asking them to clarify what categories your licence should show according to their records. They should write back within a couple of weeks or so on their letterhead, showing the correct categories. This you should keep with your licence, and send it in to the DVLA as evidence, should the worst happen.

Just thought I'd share this, from a topic on another forum.
Thumbs Up

Great advice. getting your layer to witness and copy your old licence is not a bad idea either.

Only speaking from other people's experience, photocopying is unsafe. 1930 Ariel's suggestion of an official photocopy is a good one. Maybe a photograph would be sufficient? Who knows?

A bank may do it for you, as they do make copies for graphic data, and stamp + sign it to certify it. Although they might not

We've been reccomended that if you send your licence in you should take a photocopy of both parts of your license and have it signed by a professional (police officer, doctor etc.). Try and dig out your theory and practical pass certificates too (if you have them).

Taking a photograph sounds like a good idea though

If you take a photograph, do it on film not digital. Digital can be tampered with.

A certified copy is admissable in court so it should convince them if things came to that. The wording I used when I last sent off my licence was:

I hereby certify that this copy* is an accurate representation of the original, with particular reference to the categories shown in sections 9 and 14. Sign; print; date (in words); position; address:

I got one of my work colleagues (vets) to sign and stamp it with their official Ministry stamp.

If you got it all on one page, get them to initial each part. If there is more than one page insert "consisting of x pages" at the * and get them to sign and date each page. The above should be written ON the copy. If they have a rubber stamp, the pages should be fan-stamped.

I believe banks will usually do you a certified copy of pretty much any document for a fee too.

send it via post, to the people that caused all the hassle in the first place? sounds like the ideal way for them to brush it under the rug. combination of royal mail and dvla is a recipe for disaster, both cannot be trusted

i've got a certified copy of my licence x 2, if my licence ever got lost, or came back missing categories, i would be going down to the DVLA in person, to deliver it, and get a receipt, plus a signature from the person recieving it, declaring what the categories were

my licence has been gone for three weeks now, in order to activate a provisional class C, anticipating the worst at the moment

You know this hadn't occurred to me at all - but I'm moving house in a few weeks and I'd hate to lose the "A" I worked so hard for. I'll make sure to get a couple of certified copies done before I send my licence off.

Thanks all!
