PostPosted: 11:55 - 01 Feb 2007    Post subject: Rudeness Reply with quote

Why is it that some people no matter what are allways as rude as they can be when speaking to you, its as if you are scum and their royalty for we dont deserve to be spoken to as decent human beings.

For some reason my work seems to consider one rude user to important to do anything about this, and just cower away incase a complain is made about them.

I work on an IT helpdesk for a rather large company that has outsourced their IT to us. Currently i work first and second line technical support. Theres this one user that looking through her call history shows shes very rude to alot of our staff and has been to me everytime she calls. Its like this even before you talk to her she just starts the call of rude. Alot of the calls we log she refuses to help us diagnose the problems then complains when she gets asked for the same information we were asking.

Ive just had her on the phone and this time she stepped up to a new level of rudeness. Now im allways as polite as possible but when someone starts being that rude to me i find it very difficult to go out of my way to help and be polite back. Im never rude back but im not esactly polite about it. Best way to describe it is they will know im not happy about the way their talking to me, and i will defend the engineers their slagging of.

Anyway the call she was chasing in question was shut down because despite the engineer speaking to her colleagues she was never at her desk and unable to contact her, to which i explained this to the user. I had called the engineer and he was popping up in 10 mins to see her. But before i had a chance to explain that she was going mad at me for the engineer not leaving a voicemail and saying she is a busy person. I tried to explain the engineers are very busy and simply do not have the time to leave a note on your desk (this was something they should allways do in her view). I then had to stop her from hanging up so that she would be there when the engineer turns up. Now this user has never had bad service form us, infact because she complains so much she usually gets excellent service and better than most receive.

However when i put the phone down my new supervisor (see: C**K) starts moaning at me for being rude back, well he who casts the first stone. I then state that i want to file a complaint against her as she is allways rude to me down the phone before ive said anything. The simple answer i get back is "No" and this is something we just have to put up with, he then starts again going mad at me for being rude back. At this point even my colleagues turn round and say we should take this of the several users in question and we need a way of filing a complaint against them. Guess what my supervisor with no experiance of the desk does what he allways does and ignores the people that work here. He says "No" and turns around ignoring us.

Worse thing is our managers just got promoted and is leaving our side so our supervisor is also our new manager. Evil or Very Mad

Despite my little rant there where do these people get of?

Youve got the incredably rude people who surely must realise why everyone is so unhelpfull and rude to them, they must see it doesnt really get them anywhere or even liked by being so rude.

Then youve got my supervisor/manager who doesnt know the desk but doesnt listen to the people that have worked here all this time. Im sure there are plently of managers etc out there like that.

Anyway rant over, had to get it of my chest

I dont think it's the cause for god sake....i rarely meet rude people.

I've had experiences of people being rude over the phone or to my face, when they dont know who i am or what i'm going to say. You have to pity them really, perhaps she gets no dick what so ever.
Is she hidiously fat?
There's a problem there and it's not because she's on a help desk.

Can't you politely say something like "Madam, you are being rude, please stop or I will terminate this phone call.".

It's a bit shit when your supervisor isn't interested. We had one woman kept phoning us and being rude, bordering on abusive. I could see one of the receptionists was getting upset by her on the phone one time so I took the call off her and said the following: "Mrs. xxx, this is the third time you have been rude and abusive to members of our office staff. You have also been abusive to both myself and one of the other vets in the past. We do not need clients like you, please take your custom elsewhere. I am instructing our staff not to serve you if you come in again.". Then hung up right away.

I then told my boss I'd done it, he agreed it was the right thing to do.

Not even allowed to hang up, only thing we can do is if their being abusive to you, we can then turn around and say to our "supervisor" can you monitor the call, if they havent hung up allready. If she was abusive to me she'd be easier to deal with but rude there seems tob e nothing we can do about it. Everyone has a bad day and can be in a bad mood from time to time, that i understand but not everytime you call.

I would love to be able to have the upper hand and tell the user what you did. Sometimes thats whats needed to get through to people

Christ, I have every sympathy - I do the same job (out-sourced) we get the same suff here!

We have the odd similar user. They just wont ruffle me! Your boss should support you if it is a known problem customer.

Despite being customer support, it should not mean the customer can be rude.

PS - Rise above them. There is nothing that will annoy them more than staying calm and professional.

I am having to do this in a personal situation at the mo. I can proudly say, I have always remained polite, calm and factual and he 'hates' it.

Go to your supervisor, explain that you find this customer very difficult to deal with because of her attitude to you and politely request that in future any calls from her are routed directly to him so that he (with all his experience and tact Wink ) can handle her properly and show you what you should be doing.......

I'm always nice to our IT guys, and they look after me too. Our IT infrastructure at work is old and rubbish, things are always breaking down, and there are over 120 of us who could need their help at any one time. I wouldn't want to have to do their job, they get a lot of grief over it.

I always found that tuning out the ranting while thinking about something else or carrying on with work always seemed to help. I'd then politely ask them to repeat what they just said. I'll admit it seems like a rather petty way to annoy people, but it'd (almost) always give me time to cool off a bit and it'd encourage the caller to choose their words a bit more carefully. If what they just said sounded rude, then making them repeat it might help them see that, and if they were trying to explain a technical problem, then it would encourage them to stick to the facts.

I find being polite when making a complaint about anything is far much better then being rude in anyway. After one polite phone call complaining to my bank they gave me my bank charges back. I think it would of been a different matter if I phoned up in an angry frame of mind. Why don't people understand that no one will want to comply with their demands if they are just being rude and condescending about it.

Yeah, brilliant. My wee brother does that to people all the time.

They rant on, he says "Pardon?", they repeat themselves then he says "I heard you the first time!" (in as sarcastic a manner as he can). Makes them totally raging.

He did it during an altercation he was having with a coach driver at a filling station (over who was parking where), I thought the guy was going to either thump him or have a heart attack.

We have over 1500 users to support and about 1300 of them in the same building. Thers a few of us here on the phones then a few desktop engineers, network and server support desks etc but not alot. ive worked both sides so i know what its like and the times when you are really helpfull and really want to do as much as you can for a user is when they are polite and friendly people.

Its not funny! Laughing Laughing Laughing Laughing

I've got to be nice to everybody - especially cos one of the receptionists is particularly dozy on the phone, and the other can be a bit snappy - so I have a reputation as being the "nice" receptionist who is very patient with almost all callers ... and although being nice is my natural state of being, its not ALWAYS in my nature - and especially not with the quality of callers in THIS industry.

Some callers are just arrogant. I often have to correct them when they say things like "What have you got today?" (What??? Do you mean "who", love?)

Some are sneaky and try asking questions all innocently, and then end up with "can I sniff your knickers?" to try and surprise/shock you.

Others get put off when I say "Oh look girlies, here's another pervy one!" ... and occasionally we get submissives ringing up asking to be non-paying slaves (I think NOT!). I have to be extra extra polite to them, else they get their rocks off on me being bossy.

I have only ONE phonecaller who I will allow to have a wank on the phone. We talk about him wearing tights (which he usually does whilst calling me ... makes a hole in them and spanks his monkey thru it) ... and also occasionally about how large horses dicks are. Took me a while to get his confidence for him to discuss that, usually we just discuss his (or my) tights - obviously mine are non-existent, I just play along.

He's a regular caller that even the boss allows to speak to her, he pays nothing except his own phone bill, and never comes to visit. But he's been calling for years, so we play along and have what appears to most people who might be listening to be a normal little chit-chat (except its about a man wearing tights) - whilst he pulls his pud. He doesn't even do the heavy breathing thing when he cums. Its quite amusing, cos I don't even know I've had a result until he goes "Okay Kat, I must go now." and he buggers off, satisfied. Prolly having splattered his load in some phone box in Ireland (which is where he calls from).

The pervy wretch! Bless his little holey barely-blacks. Laughing

that's a bloody good idea. SoulRider? Next time that woman calls, ask her what she's wearing and get her to crack one off over the phone. It's not a tactic I've ever considered, but it sounds like a winner to me Thumbs Up

On the other side of the "rudeness on the phone" aspect, I get quite upset with the abruptness of the increasing numbers of African customer-service people in places like social services, housing, etc.

I tend to find that instead of getting hysterical and/or rude with them, crying gently makes them either get more obnoxious (at which point you can complain to their supervisors) or makes them realise they have to speak to you more politely.

They don't realise they are doing it half the time, but I'm getting to the point of frustration with them that I am tempted to ask for an English person to speak to, rather than feel like a second-class citizen to a person who has been in this country considerably less time than I have.
